My husband’s life was worth $160,000. But we didn’t have it!
Four months ago my vital, charming, life-loving, husband suffered a massive heart attack while out of the country. There was no time or money to fly him home. (The Med-Evac Life Flight costs would have been a quarter million dollars!) Our only option was immediate surgery. But what a terrible choice: Pay our lifelong savings to save his life or…? Or what? Let him die? I love my wonderful husband of many decades so there was no choice. And so, with the clock ticking, my husband had triple bypass open-heart surgery on the spot. It cost $160,000 in cash for co-pays, deductibles and various other uncovered medical bills. And it wiped us out financially.
Now we have little left in assets, nothing left to sell, and we’re struggling to pay for ongoing medical care, rehabilitation and medications of more than $1000 a month plus our minimal living costs.
The greatest nightmare we older people have is outliving our money. I know some of you have the same fears. Well, it really is as terrifying as all of our worst dreams. No matter how frugally you’ve lived, a catastrophe can come along and wipe you out.
That’s why I’ve had to swallow my pride and ask for help. A thoughtful donation from you may help toward another month of ongoing life for us, paying for doctors, paying for meds; paying for daily life. Please give what you can knowing that it will come back to you some day. Thank you for having such caring hearts.
And please, please pass this on. Sharing with your friends helps more than anything.
