My name is Sarah Layher. I am the full-time caregiver to my husband who was catastrophically injured in the Navy as well as the mother of 7. We also have an 11 year old daughter with a rare neuromuscular disease that is rapidly deteriorating (similar to ALS).
We have been in need of a home that is handicap accessible due to my daughter’s progressive neuromuscular condition and for my husband’s disabilities (Traumatic Brain Injury, Severe Epilepsy, PTSD etc). We found a home that would fit our needs and immediately listed our home for sale. We quickly received a NON contingent offer which is exactly what we needed and moved forward with that!
Our appraisal was done with errors twice, which was going to delay our closing on the new home. We didn’t want to delay the closing for our buyers who had asked us to move our closing date up in the beginning due to them needing the home quickly, so we entered into an expensive preoccupancy agreement ($200 a day) with the seller of the new home in order to keep everything going smoothly.
The day after entering into the preoccupancy agreement, it was revealed that the buyers were in fact contingent upon the sale of their home and that the original closing date they asked for was never possible because the buyer of their home had only entered into contract with them 2 weeks prior. We were already financially responsible for the preoccupancy agreement, so after reassurance we would close the following week, we took occupancy.
Through all of this, our seller is very unhappy and said that the last extension he signed he would NOT go past that date.
Yesterday the bomb was dropped on us that our buyer went from AD military to reserves in the middle of this deal, which made him lose his qualification for the loan when they were doing the final proof of employment. They are trying to see if they can redo the loan with the wife.
Right now we are at the mercy of the seller of this new home. We already spent $7000 on the movers who moved us in (with medically needy people it was necessary to get a moving company). We’re currently racking up a daily preoccupancy amount, while facing the possibility of being forced to move back into our old home. The money for the move, preoccupancy etc. was planned to be covered by money from closing on our other home. Right now between the movers, home inspections, appraisals, and several other things part of this sale/purchase, we are out THOUSANDS and are literally tapped out entirely. We’re also out the 15k stairlift that the VA had provided for our other home because removing it was one of the conditions in our sale.
We don’t have the money to move back or to cover the outstanding expenses we still have with this entire purchase and preoccupancy. We are in a very very bad spot and have no idea what to do.
Add in the fact that I’m the caregiver to my husband who isn’t handling this well which is exasperating his medical issues and caring for our daughter with her increasing medical needs.... not to mention being a family of 9... I’m barely hanging on by a thread. This whole situation has been incredibly scary and traumatic. It has been horrible on the kids as well as us. We’re in an extremely vulnerable position right now and need help. Through this whole disaster, we have had no fault in any of what’s going on, but we’re the ones getting crushed.
Asking for help is very hard for me to do, but I have no idea where to go from here.
We had already been trying to find a way to afford a commercial lift to be installed in our Transit for our daughter’s powerchair (roughly $9,000) and now this has happened. We’re literally being put into financial ruin and we’re scared.
