Over Labor Day weekend, my Dad fell off of his deck and struck his head on a tree. They transported him from Ludington to Grand Rapids, where we learned that his fall caused a skull fracture and a serious brain injury. During those first 24 hours at the hospital, no one was sure whether or not we would get to keep him with us. He has already undergone a major brain surgery to try and prevent his injuries from getting worse, and is still in ICU where he will remain for quite some time. He has been in good hands, but this is only the beginning. As with head injuries, it's very unclear on what his mental and physical state will be when he wakes up. But what we do know is that there is an incredibly long road to recovery ahead for him - including intense physical therapy, some follow-up surgeries, and whatever long-term care he may need once we find out more about his state of health.
The love and support he and our family has already receieved this week has been overwhelming in the best way. We are humbled and grateful beyond words for the outpouring of love, and for everyone's prayers and hope for my dad's recovery.
But friends, I am reaching out to you now on my parents' behalf. The cost of his accident is staggering, and the bills are going to keep piling up when we find out what his future needs will be. On top of this, my dad may never be able to work again - and my parents are still paying for my mom's intense fight against breast cancer over the past 2 years (spoiler alert: she won!). There are so many unanswered questions surrounding this terrible accident, I just want to give my mom peace of mind in the area of expenses while she focuses on caring for him.
If there is anything that you can do to help them out, every little bit is appreciated beyond measure. If you can't help, we understand completely and just ask for you to share this page to reach out to others. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the prayers, love, and endless support.
And to anyone who would like to keep up on my dad's condition, I will be using this page to keep everyone updated on his status and his progress. Thank you all in advance.
