At the age of 4 years old, Lukas, was diagnosed with t-cell leukemia A.L.L. March of 2012. He has gone through chemotherapy and cranial radiation to the brain. A year later, Lukas relapsed in his central nervous system and his cancer was aggressive. He did more intensive chemotherapy, cranial radiation, and whole body radiation (TBI). Once he was in remission he was transferred to Lurie Children’s hospital for a bone marrow transplant. Lukas received the gift of life from a non related donor from Poland. We lived at Lurie’s for about 3 months in isolation. Lukas’ body has accepted the marrow and during this time his blood (dna) changed from A- to O- as his donor. We left Lurie’s October of 2013 before Halloween. All was good for a little while and then January of 2014 they went back to Lurie’s because Lukas had excruciating pain and was diagnosed with pancreatitis. We stayed with Lukas in the hospital for about a couple of weeks. Lukas was given IV fluids, pain medication, and bland foods until the inflammation decreased. Every year we go to the Star Survivorship program at Lurie children’s hospital to check Lukas’ blood counts (CBC) to see how he is doing. For 7 years Lukas was in remission and doing well until Lukas wasn’t feeling well, his speech was getting slurred, experiencing absent seizures, his gait was off and couldn’t walk on his own, very tired, he had a difficult time eating and swallowing... July 30th he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in his cerebellum called anaplastic Astrocytoma grade III (second cancer). Lukas endured 28 days of proton radiation everyday 5 x a week. He has improved since the radiation therapy but the doctors are not optimistic that he will get well. The doctors informed the family the odds are against them meaning they would eventually lose their son, Lukas. Also, the neuro-oncology team said, even if they give him chemotherapy they are not confident that it would even help at all. His parents continue to pray and hold onto hope and a miracle that God will heal their son. Lukas continues to do physical therapy 3x a week, in January he will be fitted for new braces at the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab, he wears prescription glasses with prisms to help him see better, every three months he will have MRI's done with contrast and without, Lukas sees a bunch of different health therapists for his brain tumor, he likes to swim but the family is careful now due to covid-19 and his underlying condition.
Thank you to all that have donated to Lukas' medical and health care. We appreciate it very much! Every donation counts towards his bills and health. The family is humbled and grateful by your act of kindness in giving. We ask if you could share Lukas' "Go Fund Me" page to your face book or other social media sites. Thank you and many blessings to all.
