Support My Uncle In His Fight Against Cancer

I’d like to tell you a story about someone who is very near and dear to me. It’s about one of my closest uncles, Omar Mokhtar Merzougui who is only 48 years old, a loving husband and the father of four beautiful children.

It all started on the week of November 10th. My mom went to visit my uncle and noticed that something was off. His personality was different. My uncle who was normally a very joyful and pleasant person was acting very strange. In addition, he looked like he lost a considerable amount of weight; at least 40-50 lbs. We knew for a fact that he didn’t start a new diet and he wasn't exercising. The whole picture didn't add up. Because of my mom's urging, we took him to the ER at UCLA hospital where he was told that he just had a really bad urinary infection. He was given antibiotics and sent home.

About a week later, my mom went back to visit him and it looked like he was getting worse. This didn't look like just a UTI. My parents took him back to the ER at UCLA and he was initially told that the infection did not respond to the antibiotics. This time, they decided to do a CT scan of his abdomen and pelvis to see if the infection had gotten worse. The results came back and that's when we got the worst news imaginable.

The doctors found a mass in his colon that was pushing on his bladder, it also looked like it had spread to his liver.

They told him that he most likely had stage 4 colon cancer. To our surprise, they told us that the insurance would not allow for him to be admitted and that he would be arranged for outpatient follow up the following day. When we didn't hear back the following day, we took him back to the UCLA ER because of his severe pain. Again, they did not want to admit him until after much urging they gave in and had him admitted and transferred to Glendale Adventist Hospital. He then underwent a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

On November 27, 2018 my uncle, Omar Mokhtar Merzougui, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer.

Prior to all of this happening, my uncle worked as an electrician. He had to take some time off of work after undergoing hemorrhoid surgery about 6 months ago. My uncle is the only breadwinner for his family of six. He is a loving husband and has four beautiful children with the youngest being 3 years old. He will begin chemotherapy this week and we wish to help give him a peace of mind to know that his family is being cared for. All proceeds from donations will go towards helping his family with rent, food, utilities and any other expenses they may incur. I would really appreciate any help you can offer. If you would like to donate on another platform, please feel free to reach out to me directly. InshAllah (God willing) we will reach our goal and help him with his fight against cancer. God Bless.
