For the few people who truly know me, the creation of this GoFundMe page will come as a shock; For those that don't, my name is Maria Barrios. I am a 22 year old who went from living in a first world country to the second most dangerous city in the world . I am not the type to show much emotion, much less the type to ask for help, and even less the kind of person who would ask for help from everyone and anyone. However, when it comes to my family, I put myself and comfort zone aside because I will try to do everything I can to help them.
While it is no coincidence that I have come around to asking for help around the same time I was obligated to move back to Venezuela, I am not asking for toothpaste, soap, or even toilet paper- all of which are scarce and we are in need of, desperately . (Watch video below to catch up on the crisis that is my country).
We have literally been asked to brush our teeth less, and ration our food. And although I’m in disbelief about the shortage of primary goods, and the hour long lines to get what there is left to get at grocery stores, I am asking for help in regards to a more urgent matter.
My mother has been diagnosed with Morbid Obesity and is in dire need of a Gastric Bypass surgery, and if something so basic such as milk can’t be found at a grocery store, believe me, there isn’t healthy food or basic medication, either.

My mothers weight is catching up with her, she's getting headaches, hypertension (high blood pressure), and its even affecting her knees. No one will insure her based on her preexisting health conditions because they know she needs this surgery, and don’t want to fund it. No one will give her a good job because of her age. We are frustrated and alone. So, I am opening up to the world for help.
Please help save my mother’s life by reallocating those $5 you were saving for a drink at Starbucks towards my mother’s surgery, instead. (Those anti-Christmas cups pissed you off anyway, right?) In all seriousness, her health gets worse with every passing day. Please share, donate or pray as much and as soon as possible. You might not know my mother too well, but she has fought her entire life to keep me safe. Now I am fighting for her. Venezuela can take away everything, but I will not let them take away my mom because of this hopelessly flawed system. To everyone reading this, spare a dollar or not, I want to encourage you to never let your environment define you.
