Preserve Unique Gun Control Group

The Backstory
On June 12, 2016, the One Pulse for America Facebook group was founded in response to the mass shooting at The Pulse nightclub in Orlando with a big membership push from actor/activist George Takei. One Pulse is a tight-knit, online community of gun control advocates who take action on a daily basis to permanently close the “passion gap” with pro-gun activists.

After 10 years working at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, I was hired as the director of One Pulse for America. Since then, members of the One Pulse FB group have taken more than 30,000 reported actions to prevent gun violence.

The Problem
The recent controversy surrounding user security on Facebook, and the resulting changes in the algorithm, have resulted in cut-backs across the board at nearly all digital media operations. Unfortunately, that means One Pulse for America’s original source of funding from Team Takei (headed by Jay Kuo) is now insufficient to fully support the group's work.

Why You Should Care
First, because One Pulse for America is unique among gun control groups. Our volunteers (FB group admins, Twitter/Instagram account managers) and members (90K) are at the heart of everything we do: developing new ideas for campaigns, influencing decision-makers through action, and sharing important information about the issue.

Second, because we get results. One Pulse for America members have contributed to many big victories for gun control, including:

· Telling the House and Senate to pass the Fix NICS Act to help states get records on disqualified gun buyers to the FBI.

· Telling Chubb Limited to stop underwriting “Carry Guard” insurance for the NRA.

· Asking Everytown for Gun Safety (+Moms Demand Action) and Giffords to change their policy to support an assault weapons ban.

· Telling House Speaker Paul Ryan to table the dangerous SHARE Act that would have de-regulated silencers.

· Telling Senators to send radical pro-gun blogger Brett Talley’s nomination for a judgeship back to the White House.

Third, because we provide tangible, daily metrics of the results of our work by reporting real-time tallies of the number of actions taken in our campaigns here .

How You Can Help
One Pulse for America is hoping to raise $25,000 to cover my part-time (20 hrs) salary as director and administrative costs for the rest of this year and into 2019.

Here’s what your money will pay for:

· Each work-day (M-F), I publish an interactive webpage for a new action campaign at the One Pulse for America website, then alert One Pulse members via a post in our FB group.

· I moderate the One Pulse for America FB group on a regular basis (weekdays & weekend) to admit new members, share member content, and ban trolls.

· I represent One Pulse for America during conference calls & meetings conducted by the National Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Coalition. I also represent One Pulse at GVP-related events—vigils, protests, rallies, hearings, etc.

· I do media outreach: informing reporters about One Pulse action campaigns & handling requests for media availability.

Thank You
I’ve been active in the GVP movement for 18 years now. This work is near and dear to my heart. I want my children to grow up in a safe America. Because of the voice & activism of this incredible young generation, there are real opportunities to enact strong gun reforms and fundamentally change America’s culture on guns.

I know One Pulse for America members can continue to be a powerful force in that drive to save lives.

Your support is appreciated!
