Together for the Fishing Families of Northern Peru!

The devastating “maretazo” that struck El Ñuro has left more than 35 fishing families without their only source of livelihood. Their boats and tools, built over years of hard work, have been destroyed or submerged. This disaster not only swept away material possessions but also robbed these families of the hope and dignity that the sea provides. On top of this, the recent oil spill in Lobitos has further exacerbated their vulnerability.

In response to this crisis, we have launched a comprehensive action plan to raise funds and help these families rebuild their future. Our goal is to finance the repair and replacement of their boats, essential for restoring their ability to work and sustain their households. This collective effort aims not only to repair what was lost, but also to strengthen the resilience of a community that has always shown strength in the face of adversity.

Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to recovery. We can restore their tools, dignity, and hope for a brighter future with your support. Together, we can ensure the sea remains their livelihood, and their dreams stay afloat.

UPDATE
CROWDFUNDING CALETA EL ÑURO

Friday, January 3, 2025:

At 11:00 am on January 3, 2025, we met at the Nuro pier with the community leaders:
- Marcelino Gonzales: President of the fishermen's guild. +51 986 127 654
- Rafael Morales: Pier manager: +51 982 854 225
- Armando Gonzales: President of the Ñuro Tourism Association: +51 972 087 055
- Felix Masa Fiestas: Member of the Ñuro Tourism Association: +51 969 290 667
- Jaime Chulle: Sergeant of the Ñuro beach captaincy. +51 9600 59 897
- On behalf of the Condominium, Gina Campodónico, Henri Robert Haakan, Renzo Yamashiro, Rolf Honger and Flor Padilla were present and we communicated that we are raising funds to help them.
They are very grateful for the solidarity with them, without having to have called us and now they have us in the concept that we are part of their community.

The following needs were identified:
1) Review the structure of the platform that supports the dock and serves for the embarkation and disembarkation of the boats. Very high investment and it is the responsibility of the regional government. How can we help them in this point:
- Reinforce the tires they use to get on and off the dock.
- Support them with PR and get the national press and social networks involved to make the problem visible in the community. Currently, government support went to Órganos, Máncora, Zorritos, Cancas and left them without support, when the most affected are Ñuro and Canoas.
- A community guide was identified to generate and promote the union's social networks to make the problem visible and call the attention of the authorities and collect donations. Tomorrow Judith Jacinto Reyes will come to the hotel at 9:30 am with a GoPro photographer to talk and support them with communication axes, photographic documentation and reports.
2) Affected boats: 20 in total, of which 3 fishing boats can be recovered and 2 for tourism. 17 total loss
- Cost of boats: Fully equipped (new) S/.75,000 PEN. each. Only the hull, without motor or implements 25K. Wooden boats
- The two tourist boats are made of fiber. They currently have 25 operational tourist boats and they are all helping each other.
- 15 fishing boats have disappeared or are a total loss.
- They currently have 170 boats on the high seas that are dedicated to fishing
- The residents are facing financial losses and indebtedness from loans. To recover them, they are asking for 50% of the value and they would finance the other 50% (Mr. Marcelino Gonzalez)
- They would like the government to provide them with soft bank loans so that they can finance the reconstruction and/or purchase of their boats (Fodopez)
3) Reconstruction of the stairs and railings that were washed away by the waves, which they used to embark and disembark tourists and fishermen. Keep in mind that currently 80% of the inhabitants are dedicated to tourism activities in the low fishing season and we are in the middle of the beginning of the high tourist season. The platform that was the link to get on the boats is anchored in the high seas and can be recovered at no cost.
- Amount to invest: Ladder approx 20K, Railings 10K (without these they close the dock). Total S/.30,000 PEN. They have already requested from the supplier who made the ladder an update of their quote that they will not share, to be clear about the amount to invest.
- The donation will be made to the bank account of the fishermen's union in Caja Piura and they will give us as compensation the clear accounts where they are using this donation, showing daily through their networks and a report to the condominium of the progress of the reconstruction of the ladder and the restart of their tourist activities.

Our recommendation is to support them with the reconstruction of the staircase and the railings so that they can reactivate their tourist activity and have their source of income to maintain their homes, as well as benefit all tourists by being able to live the magical experience of swimming with the turtles from which we all benefit.

On the other hand, support will be provided so that they can correctly manage their social networks and make the Nuro, the turtles, and the families that are being affected visible and attract the attention of the government, authorities, and the general public who want to make donations.
