Who are we?
We are Daniella and Andrea Moreno Pannaci, sisters, and Odontology students. We believe that education and participation are the true weapons to change the world. We began our journey 14 years ago volunteering for the first time at Operation Smile Venezuela, the local branch of the international nonprofit organization that provides free treatment to children with cleft lip and palate conditions. We have not stopped ever since. Now, we need help to complete our education.
Our Story:
Fourteen years ago, when we started volunteering at Operation Smile we were just children. We were assigned to the pre-surgery recreation area, helping the little patients to relax before the surgery as well as assisting with any other age-appropriate tasks that we could perform; we can say that we grew up in Operation Smile.
With the passing of time, we move on to help in other areas and getting more responsibilities. After a while we enrolled in the School of Odontology. Nowadays we volunteer in the organization as dentistry students. However, after four years of studies at Universidad Central de Venezuela, we found ourselves having to make a very difficult decision in order to be able to finish our education and fulfill our dreams.
It is not a secret that Venezuela is currently going through a very critical economic and political situation. Basic living conditions are rapidly deteriorating for the entire population. Venezuelans are being affected by diminishing resources and instability. However, the worst is the lack of personal safety and the uncertainty about the future. That was what actually tipped the balance for us.
According to the United Nations, Venezuela is ranked as the second most violent country in the world. Venezuelans are facing robberies, kidnappings and murder on a daily basis. This has happened even inside of our university campus in many instances. We have personally been victims of robbery at gunpoint and barely escaped from being kidnapped in another occasion. Not feeling safe on the streets or even at home it’s a feeling that every Venezuelan lives with. This is why we took the hard decision of leaving our family behind, to start a new life in an unknown country for us, that offered the hope of a better future. Once we made the decision and after considering all our options, we decided to transfer and finish our degree at Universidad Europea de Madrid (Spain).
Currancy Exchange Situation in our country:
“In 2003, Venezuela’s government created an Institution which main goal is to control currency exchange (CADIVI). Every Venezuelan who wants to travel abroad for any reason, to any country, has to go through the arduous process of begging government to allow them to buy foreign currency with their own earned money”.
In our case, we asked the government to exchange Venezuelan currency (our own money) to euros through CADIVI, so we could pay school abroad. In order to make the request, we had to present a folder with many documents (Visa, plane ticket, letter of acceptance from the school, etc). We moved to Spain still waiting for an answer; and after 3 months attending school in Spain, we received a letter saying that our request was denied. (All documents were correct and complete, but CADIVI didn’t give any explanation). This happened to many Venezuelans students around the world who had to abandoned their studies, and come back to Venezuela. We decided work hard to stay in Spain and finish our degree.

Our Goal:
With considerable efforts we managed to collect (between our dollar’s savings and a loan) 80% of our tuition and basic living expenses, unfortunately this wasn’t enough, we are still missing 18.000 €. That is why we come to you, through this website where every donation counts, we hope that you can help us get closer to our goal: To be able to continue in the path of making a positive impact in this world as healthcare professionals.

Somos Daniella y Andrea Moreno Pannaci, hermanas y estudiantes de odontología. Desde hace aproximadamente 14 años hemos sido voluntarias activas de la Fundación Operación Sonrisa Venezuela, la cual brinda tratamiento gratuito a niños con hendidura de labio y paladar. Comenzamos en esta Fundación siendo niñas y participando principalmente en actividades de recreación a los pacientes en el área pre-quirúrgica y luego colaboramos como pasantes en el área de Odontología; A través de los años hemos comprendido que lo más importante del voluntariado, es que trabajando en equipo se logran grandes cambios y se alcanzan las metas propuestas.
Nuestra Historia:
Luego de estudiar 4 años en la Universidad Central de Venezuela UCV, decidimos transferirnos a la Universidad Europea de Madrid (España), por la situación crítica que atraviesa nuestro país.
Cada día el escenario político-económico de Venezuela empeora; pero lo que nos llevó a tomar esta decisión radical, es la inseguridad. Según la ONU Venezuela es el 2do país más violento del mundo, diariamente los venezolanos somos víctimas de robos, secuestros y asesinatos, los cuales suceden incluso dentro de nuestra Universidad, siendo nosotras mismas víctimas de intento de secuestro y robos con armas de fuego. La incertidumbre y el miedo de no saber si al salir por la mañana regresarás a casa, es el día a día del venezolano. Los problemas del país también repercuten sobre la UCV, en la cual hay paros docentes y administrativos frecuentemente; al sumar todos los paros durante nuestra estancia da un total aproximado de 1 año y medio de tiempo perdido. Actualmente la UCV está paralizada desde hace 6 meses por un paro profesoral.
Por estas razones tomamos la difícil decisión de separarnos de nuestra familia para terminar nuestra formación universitaria y arriesgarnos a emprender un nuevo camino en un país desconocido, en búsqueda de un mejor futuro.
Control de cambio en Venezuela:
En el 2003 el gobierno venezolano creó una institución con el objetivo de establecer un control cambiario (CADIVI). Si un venezolano quiere viajar, por cualquier razón a cualquier país, tiene que pasar por un arduo proceso para solicitar al gobierno permiso para cambiar Bolívares (moneda venezolana) a moneda extranjera.
Nosotras solicitamos la compra Euros a través de CADIVI para pagar nuestros gastos de matrícula y manutención. Para hacer esta solicitud fue necesario entregar una carpeta con muchos documentos (Visa, pasaje aéreo, carta de aceptación de la Universidad, etc), los cuales fueron entregados 1 mes antes del viaje. Al mudarnos a España, aun no habíamos recibido respuesta; y finalmente, 3 meses después recibimos una carta informando la negación de la solicitud (todos los documentos entregados estaban correctos y completos; sin embargo, CADIVI no dio explicación alguna). Muchos estudiantes venezolanos alrededor del mundo recibieron la misma respuesta negativa y tuvieron que abandonar sus estudios y volver a Venezuela. Nosotras decidimos hacer un gran esfuerzo para mantenernos en España y terminar nuestro Grado.

Nuestro Objetivo:
Para pagar nuestros estudios recurrimos a un préstamo y a nuestros ahorros en dólares (con lo cual logramos cubrir un 80% del total); sin embargo, esto no ha sido suficiente, aun nos hacen falta 18.000€. Es por ello que acudimos a ustedes a través de este recurso donde cada aporte, por más pequeño que sea, es un granito de arena que suma para lograr nuestra meta.
Por nuestra parte, nos comprometemos a seguir aportando nuestro tiempo y conocimiento para ayudar a los más necesitados.
