Hello everyone,
my Step Dad, Michael O'Rourke, was in a motorcycle accident. He had to be air lifted to the Med due to the injury he suffered. This would be the second helicopter ride he's taken, and it wasn't for fun. The first Hellicopter ride that Mike and my Mom, Patti Romano, experienced was in 2005. My mother was thrown off a cliff, riding the Dragon's Tail in Knoxville TN . Mike was thrown the opposite direction, from my Mom, into a tree chest first. His injuries consisted of not one, but all of his ribs broken, a punctured lung, road rash from head to toe, internal bleeding, to say the least. If it wasn't for Mike, my Mom would not be a live today. He crawled to her, literally, on his hands. Dragging himself down a cliff just to be next to her. My Mother hit her head directly into a tree. She did not know it at the time, but her helmet, it wasn't manufactured to handle the force. The tree prevented her from falling further, however, she was suffering from serious head trauma. The medics that got to her had to drill a hole in her skull just to relieve the pressure and prevent further damage. Her recovery alone took almost, if not longer than, a year. The recovery and rehabilitation process went from remembering who her family was, to talking, walking, writing, and so on. Now, this wreck has happened. Mike experienced what's called an "Open Book" fracture of the pelvis. Imagine a book, it's being dropped on the floor, and then landing on it's pages facing down. Not only did his pelvis split and separate in half, all of the tendons ripped, the intestines came lose that the pelvis holds, his bladder ruptured, and he broke his tail bone. These injuries are very painful, the recovery time takes months on end, maybe even a year or greater, and become extremely costly. I am telling their story from experiencing it first hand. The first wreck, we helped, took care of, and were there for both of them throughout. This time around we are needing additional support. From you. The hospital bill alone was 150,000.00. Yes, Mike has insurance. However, insurance pays a portion leaving him and my Mom out of pocket 10,000.00 plus guaranteed. Remember that amount is just for the hospital. It does not include medical expenses afterwards, physical therapy, future surgeries if needed, medications, lost wages from long term disability, and cuts in pay.
