My Story

I am a Trinidadian. My name is Emilio, I go by Milli. I’m 26. I moved to the USA when I was a baby with my parents, and I remain an “undocumented” (although there is plenty of documentation that I exist) non-citizen with all the many challenges that that condition brings.

I’ve been surviving off of the support of friends and family but I’ve been through the grinder the same as millions of others through COVID season lockdowns and I stand small this year after facing abuses and tremendous instability, mental health challenges as a result of the trauma and consequences of said events and the circumstances leading to their arising in my life.

I am ready to secure the next level toward my independence in the USA (whatever that means beyond a certificate anymore).

I am on the last leg of my immigration process, with only a medical exam needed for me to be able to submit an adjustment of status form.

However, in the midst of a hectic moving process last year (one of several I’ve undergone the last couple of years), I lost my passport and that stands as my only ID.

I need to replace that to move forward with the exam.

I’m also currently uncertain how long my present housing situation will last me, so I’ll need to be prepared for the need to pay for emergency shelter, food, etc.

Once I’ve been able to secure a replacement passport, I’ll then need to pay for the exam itself. Funds I’ve received in the past for said purpose have been unfortunately put on the line of becoming survival funds and I’ve only just reached a point of stability where I can say that with the right help and support I will power forward to the end of this before the end of 2021.

QUEER BLACK LIVES MATTER.
ALL BLACK LIVES MATTER.

The process of proving your humanity and right to claim it is a consistently exhausting, humiliating and only sometimes fruitful experience.

In 2020, the world sees that black peoples across the diaspora are still being denied that most fundamental concept of a right to exist within the wholeness of ones existence, as one enters the world.

Many are still being asked to prove that despite centuries of blood, sweat, and tears spilled to the earth in the false name of white supremacy; through centuries of rebellion and protesting in every way possible, through fevered dancing, clapping, singing, praying, screaming, we have been declaring “I am here,” and no more evidence that we are truly here and deserve with every unit of force and energy to be here would be necessary beyond all of that and yet here we are.

Now our bodies carry generations of people onward to the liberation of the black body, image, and voice.
