Help me cover costs for GA Bootcamp
So as some of you know, I was accepted in General Assembly for the May 22 cohort and was awarded a scholarship through General Assembly's Opportunity Fund (https://generalassemb.ly/opportunity-fund). However, that only covers tuition and not books or any other materials I'll need. Nor does it cover living expenses.
The good news:
Even though I've been unemployed since October, I am lucky in that I dont have to worry about rent or terribly huge expenses like a car (I actually dont have one!) and, more than likely, I will be approved for an unemployment extension via the California Training Benefit program(http://www.edd.ca.gov/pdf_pub_ctr/de8714u.pdf). That'll help with living expenses during the boot camp.
The bad news:
I initally was due to start class in March but due to some complications with my California Training Benefit application, I wasn't able to apply in time to be able to start in March. My unemployment benefits end May 7th and class starts May 22nd.
While expenses are low, they're still there so I have to account for that.. On top of that, I have no idea how long it'll take for my extension, assuming I get approved, will kick in.
So I'll have a gap where I will potentially have no cash while in class.
I've pretty much wiped my savings over the last 6 months between medical expenses from an back injury and making up for a reduction of income due to unemployment on top of the normal suprises that come up.
Sooooo it's a bit dicey at the moment.
I've compiled a spreadsheet of expenses and income here if you really wanna crunch the numbers
Look, I'm not here for reading budgets and all that, what do you need and when?
The short spiel is this. I need to make up at least $1650 at the least to make sure I can focus on this bootcamp regardless of unemployment benefits being extended or any other unforseen issues. I've been given a huge opportunity to potentially change my career and my life (this isn't hyperbole, facts only in this campaign) and I want to make sure I can focus on this 100%.
As far as the when, i'd need at least 400 bucks by May 22nd to make sure I'm ready to go for bootcamp whereas the 1650 would be a more flexible short-term goal that could be reached over a 4 month period (May 7 - August 11).
Questions
Why should I?
Because you like me and want me to succeed. Also, you really dont want me complaining on Twitter and Facebook about another dead-end job. Right? Right.
But seriously, these last 8 months have been one hurdle after another between injury, job loss and tons of sweet delicious depression. I won't bore you with the details but I've managed to somehow stay above water and catch a really great break. I can't let this slip through my fingers.
I honestly didn't even want to do this out of an inane sense of pride and a dread about potentially putting myself out to a lot of criticism (see next question to response to said criticism).
But the truth is, despite being instilled with the idea that you should always be able to take care of your own shit and never rely on the charity of others, *grits teeth* I need your help if I want to improve myself.
So i am laying personal pride and pretty much my upbringing aside to say: please me help myself.
Why don't you get a loan?/Why beg for money?/Why are you a lazy millenial?/Why did you apply for this camp when you can't afford it.../Let me tell you why you shouldn't do...
Also, my credit score is looking Nick Cage at the end of Face/Off. Or was it John Travolta. Either way, it aint looking too good!
I can't donate money but have things you may need/want, can I do that instead?
Yes! if you have a laptop that runs Mac OS Yosemite or better that you can either let me borrow over the course of my bootcamp or have outright, I'd be more than happy to use that in lieu of cash.
Would you accept services rendered for donation?
I'm handly around computers and tech and well...I am a budding web developer. Lets talk?
My question isn't answered here?
You're asking in the form of a question so i'm a bit confused. Chances are if you see this, you know who I am personally can can get in touch with me. I'll be happy to answer any questions.
Thank you for taking the time to either donate or pass this around amongst friends and family. Nearly there to something good and I hope your donation ensures I get there.
