Hello everyone!
My name is Alex and I am a freshman in college. I have had ongoing health issues throughout my life that culminated in 2014 when I had to have a brain and spinal surgery. While the surgery saved me from becoming paralyzed, it left me with life-long nerve damage and chronic pain. These two diagnoses combined with my raynauds, IBS, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, POTS Syndrome, and OCD make me rely on several medications in order to function. These medications total roughly $150 a month along with an average 2-4 specialist visits with a $60 copay each (max $240/month). Outside of the insurance realm, I rely on medical massage ($60/week), physical therapy ($240/week), and therapy to aid with my OCD and depression that comes with being in constant pain ($60/week). Additionally, my condition is detriorating, which has resulted in three ER visits in the past four months, each with a $300 copay. Total of one month (not including ER payments) is $1,830 after insurance. And all of these payments do not include the medical tests and procedures we are still paying off.
My parents are trying their best to support me, but it is becoming impossible to afford all my treatments with insurance falling through constantly. Personally, I babysit when I can but cannot hold a consistant job due to too many bad pain days and a compromised immune system. I am a hard worker and attend college on a full ride. That being said, if I can't afford my medications, I'll risk a drop in my GPA that would elimate my scholarship and, therefore, take away my chance at education. I'm asking you to please help me to just keep living.
