Father suffers from Kidney Failure

Amazing Father (Malcolm Pearson) suffers from Kidney Failure

Dear Friends and Family,

On the day of August 18th, 2016 I received a distressing call from my Aunt Betty informing me that dad was just rushed into Emergency at the hospital in Dumaguete, Philippines. On admittance to the Silliman University Medical Centre numerous complications were evident. Doctors were faced with a balancing act to try and stabilize vital signs as a result of kidney failure, high blood sugar readings, high potassium levels, severe dehydration, blood pressure of 210/100, a totally blocked prostate compounded by a food poisoning infection and creatinine levels so alarming that the chief hospital surgeon was awakened during the night. Doctors predicted that he would have been dead within 48 hours had he had not gone to emergency when he did. For 12 years my dad suffered in silence to a critically enlarged prostate gland. Prior to this episode he suffered German Measles and a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus skin infection.

My dad, at the old age of 73, has never undergone any major surgery in his life and was one of the healthiest (mind, body & spirit) people you would ever know. With the youthfulness in all his actions (including a past marathon runner in his 50s), and the ambitiousness of a entrepreneur, combined with the willingness to wake up and greet the day with a great attitude (no matter what life has thrown at him), this came as a complete shock to his close friends, our family, and I.

Laying by his side the entire time, his loving wife Sally was the first to contact family back home in Canada to inform us, despite her broken english, no available internet at the hospital and the terrible cellphone reception. Matters were complicated when the hospital had no stock of dads blood type for a blood transfusion for an emergency surgery. Sally had to franticly search and canvas for blood donors outside of the hospital. She was desperately asking the guards, strangers on the street and family who live on distant islands if they could donate blood immediately to save dads life. Finally 3/5 volunteers had the proper blood type so surgeons could perform an emergency operation, which would result in the removal of 7cm (28g) tumour from his prostate as well as several pea sized kidney stones. Dad was in a comatose state for several days post surgery, unable to speak or move much.

Adding misfortune to my dads already critical condition, doctors expressed their serious concern that my dad may have prostate cancer. Talk was already stirring about what kind of treatments he would have to undergo, including chemotherapy and radiation. With the scare of losing my best friend, a week later biopsy reports finally came in to bring us the fortunate news that there were no traces of cancerous cells as of now. But on top of the complications upon his admittance, my dad now is also diagnosed with chronic Prostatitis. Treatments will include copious amounts of medications for his heart and prostate, as well as pain suppressors to put him at some level of comfortability. Therapy will run for a minimum of four weeks, which he will unfortunately have to endure during his 74th birthday.

As anxiety raises in the hearts and minds of close friends and loved ones, so have the medical expenses. With no coverage in the Philippines, my father is left with the financial burden that is far beyond his means to pay while in recovery. Our family and most importantly my father, is entirely distraught emotionally, physically, and financially. With no more means of financial support for my dad (who is unfit to travel back to Canada to receive the free health care he needs), we ask you in this trying time for your help!

The time leading up to my dad's diagnosis has caused a great deal of financial struggle. Because of these health issues, he has not been able to work and will not be able to work for a minimum of six months. Even after this period, he will not be able to perform any tasks that require any physical effort. These health issues have left my dad's family in a dire financial situation, as they have drained their savings and pawned all their jewellery to compensate for medical bills.

These medical bills sprung up at an unprofitable time, as he is in the process of funding the construction of a home for his family. His house needs to be completed by April in order to provide suitable living conditions and shelter for his family. Sally has been taking time from her everyday duties to be with and aid my dad through his treatment and recovery. At the same time, my little brother is being taken care of by close family friends. This has put my family under immense financial and emotional pressure that is only adding to the severity of the situation.

I want to raise enough funds to cover my dad and his family's living expenses and other expected costs hoping to take all financial stress away, so my dad can focus on his recovery and health to further care for his wife and provide the support for raising his five year old son.

When I visited him in the Philippines in 2014 to 2015, he was working on the foundations of a hostel, a new family business, that Sally & my little brother can rely on as a source of steady income when my dad does pass on. My dad has always wholeheartedly been working on projects to truly benefit and positively impact the lives of others. On top of establishing his dreams of creating a safe haven for the likeminded backpackers and adventure seekers, he is managing a coconut farm and has installed a underground pipe at his expense to provide access to clean water for the locals in his village.

If you have personally experienced any of my fathers kind gestures it would be deeply appreciated if you could help him through this time of need. Every little bit helps, we would be sincerely grateful for your generosity.

Your donations will relieve my dads unfortunate situation by helping to cover the following :
-Previous & current hospital bills ($12,000)
-Costs of medications & therapy ($3,000)
-Costs of transportation (ferry & taxi) to hospital ($2,000)
-Further biopsies to be done (to continue the search of any malignant tumours that may be present) ($3,000)
-Check ups on prostate growth to be followed ($2,000)
-Shelter for his family ($4000)
-Initial start up costs to replenish savings for family business (Hostel) ($4000)
-Cost of living essentials, (and care for my little brother) ($2500)

*To those who don't personally know my dad, he has lived quite the adventurous and inspiring life. He was a frequent poet, a pilot, an oil painter, a farmer, an inventor, a biker, a traveller, a workaholic, a provider, a loving husband, the most badass and awesomest father you could have, and someone who will always put your needs before his own! Although, my dad's life has come with no shortage of heartache. At the age of 63, he filed personal bankruptcy, his business was failing as a result of his patent being stolen from him, he was newly divorced, and now had empty pockets. Trying to raise his young daughter (myself) as a single parent with the help from family members, he was taking on jobs from friends, and friends of friends, anything really, just to try and make ends meet. After pushing through several troubled years, he found his soulmate and beloved wife Sally, and I was blessed with a little brother. Things have been looking up for Malcolm.

**And for anyone who knows my father, you know he falls nothing short of the most genuine, kind-hearted, care giving man you could ever meet. Whether its covering your tab at a restaurant, landscaping your back yard to make it your summer paradise, or pouring concrete in the blistering heat so you have a newly renovated driveway. With never the expectancy of being paid or rewarded, he is always looking out to help the everyday lives of others.)

Thanks so much for the donations, the love, kind words, and support. And if you cant give financially, please send out your most positive vibes to my dad (his wife, and my little brother) for his speedy recovery and a financial miracle!
