At the age of 99, Leonid Stanislavskyi is one of the oldest tennis players in the world. Wherever he goes, he grabs attention and captures hearts.
Leonid is also one of the world’s oldest refugees, now living in Lithuania. Two years ago, he escaped as bombs fell on his hometown.
We met Leonid when we were making a documentary about Super Senior Tennis players called Silver Servers which was directed by Dan Lobb. Dan became a close friend and carer for Leonid and has offered to help him with his wish for his 100th birthday, Leonid wants to go home. And this is his chance.
The over 90s tennis World Championships takes place on the week of his birthday in Turkey, and Leonid’s been invited to play. He’s fit and determined, so the plan is to travel from his care home in Trakai to Antalya for the tournament, and then make the journey home.
He’s excited and can’t wait to go. The only previous time he was forced to spend away from his home was during WWII. But Leonid needs your help to make his dream a reality. Everything we raise will go towards making this trip happen and anything left over will also go towards his long term care in Lithuania upon his return. Dan will be using the funds to pay for the trip with Leonid and for the care home fee's where he lives now.
Any donation, no matter the size, would be hugely helpful. So come on. Let’s get Leonid home.
