Kait Moore, 20, is a Junior at Grand Valley State University where she is studying pre-veterinary medicine and is also an active member of the Pride of the Midwest- The Laker Marching Band. Kait is paying for her schooling as well as her medical and living expenses independently.  September of 2015, Kait was tested for the BRCA1 mutation and was found to be positive. Meaning that she has up to an 87% chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Depending on one's family history, breast cancer can occur as early as one's teen years or young twenties. Her family history of cancer unfortunately begins at a very young age. Her youngest family member was diagnosed with breast cancer at only 25-years-old. Last year Kait began her cancer surveillance shortly before she lost another cousin (age 37) to breast cancer.

 
Cancer has taken many family members from Kait's life, including numerous aunts/uncles as well as claiming the life of her own mother when she was at the young age of 15. She has been through a lot at a very young age, but with hardship comes strength and determination. Kait is an extremely loving, strong and determined individual.
Due to her family history with cancer, and having the BRCA1 genetic mutation, it is not so much a question of if she will get cancer- but when. Kait has decided to take action on her dispositon to developing breast cancer before it can even get a chance by undergoing a prophylactic mastectomy with immediate reconstruction on December 19th. This procedure will likely reduce her risk of breast cancer upward to 90%.
Kait is a dedicated member of our organization, BRCAn't Stop Me, which is the first collegiate organization that helps spread awareness to hereditary cancers (Specifically BRCA1/2 mutation related). 

Kait is not only a member of our organization but also considered family. This is a heavy burden for an independent 20-year-old to carry, but as her family, we are determined to help Kait in her mission to save her life and become a pre-vivor of breast cancer!
