Medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy in America, and I find myself faced with this very situation. It is threatening my ability to find housing and to get the care I need. Here is my story:
In September 2013, I went blind and was taken to the emergency room for a MRI. Later that night, I found out I have Multiple Sclerosis. The past three and a half years have been a struggle for me. I've had to work full-time, despite a myriad of MS related symptoms, such as blindness, difficulty walking, debilitating fatigue, loss of balance and cognitive changes, all just so I can make ends meet.
Unfortunately, my body couldn't handle it and 5 months ago I once again went blind. My legs became weaker, and on some days I couldn't make it farther than a block without breaking in to tears, because it hurt to walk. I was so weak that even getting out of bed zapped any energy I had. My neurologist sent me in for another MRI and I found out I have six new lesions in my brain. My disease is progressing. We decided it was in my best interest to take short term disability so that I could get better.
My disability ends this month and I do not feel well enough to return to a full-time job yet. The drastic change to my income as a result of being sick is why I am asking for help, as it has become clear that I can't get through this alone. And I believe it is the stress of facing homelessness that continues to make my disease flare up.
I need to find a new place to live in March, and being that I am on disability and that my medical bills have destroyed my credit, I am literally afraid of becoming homeless and needing to give away my cats. I never thought that after all these years of working, studying, eating healthy, exercising and volunteering in the community that I would be in this position, but I am.
Any donations you make will enable me to repair my credit by paying off invoices that were reported to credit agencies, pay the medical bills that haven't gone to collections, and to pay the increased rental deposit fee for having bad credit as a result of the medical bills. It will also help pay the premiums and deductibles for my health insurance and my doctors appointments for the next two months.
Basically, your contributions are of life saving status.
I am so very grateful to you for reading this to the end. Thank you.
For the $100 Donors, you will receive a shirt from me in the mail. Please message me which shirt you'd like, your size and your address. And may you wear it in good health!
