Jims in the Hospital - Help his fam
Donation protected
On May 1, 2015 at approximately 5:30 pm Jim Bassett was in a terrible car accident. He had just finished work and was driving home to pick up one of his kids for a little league game.
Jim has lived with severe diabetes his whole life. For several years the diabetes has been so bad that he's had to wear a small machine that is taped to his belly inside his shirt and works to regulate his insulin levels. The science that supports this is still primitive and Jim sometimes has scary moments with his diabetes where he suddenly, without warning becomes extremely fatigue and nearly loses consciousness. When this happens, Jim is urgent to drink a Mountain Dew or orange juice and check his insulin levels.
Doctors believe Jim suddenly had one of these episodes while driving yesterday afternoon. They believe the impact happened while driving around 40mph. Jim did not brace for impact. His head and chest took severe trauma. It has been over 24 hours since the accident now and Jim has still shown no signs of communication.
When he was checked into the hospital it was clear that he had several broken ribs, a punctured lung, damage to his liver but most critical were the injuries to his head. They immediately placed a breathing tube down his throat and put him in critical condition. A CTscan revealed a clot in his brain. Doctors went into his brain and removed the clot but they know there is internal bleeding and pressure. Because of the pressure, they left that area of his scalp open. Jim is now in what is called Maximum Life Support. To ease the stress on Jims organs, machines are performing many of his organ functions in hopes that his body may be relieved enough for the brain to heal.
Jim is my friend. I am deeply concerned for him and his family. As I type this, I'm fighting back tears so I may concentrate on the computer screen. It's not easy. Whats more difficult is the fact knowing that such a wonderful human being may die. Each day, Jim did nothing for himself. He takes great joy in helping others and is a father that myself and others can aspire to be. I remember being on a camping trip with him years ago. He was awake before all of us, cooking up breakfast, always happy and full of life. Always grateful for everything he had and unbothered by lifes little misfortunes. Anyway....it was very early and he was cooking and talking on the phone to one of his kids about a nightmare she had just awoken from. Jim was trying so hard to comfort his daughter over the phone. Among the distraction, he burnt a good amount of food and we laughed about it later over 1 or 2 beers. (maybe more)
In my perfect world none of this would have happened. Jim would have made it home and gone to the little league game and the kids would have crowded around him eager to give high fives. In my perfect world I wouldn't be on this website asking people to help out. But Jims family and children need help. They don't need any additional stress in the coming months. Jim won't be able to work, he will probably need reconstructive surgery among other things. I've chosen gofundme because almost everything goes to Jim and his family, the website takes very little.
You may know Jim, you may not, I don't know. I do know that it feels great to give. Take a moment now and do the right thing. Make a donation here. It will warm your soul and will help a family that so desperately needs your help right now. After you've done that, There is one more thing I need from you though, and please take this seriously. Share this link on your Facebook or Instagram or whatever it is you use. I will update this GoFundme as we have news. Thank You Again
God Bless You
