My name is Jess, I'm a 25 year old theatre maker from Bristol, currently studying at the world-renowned Ecole International de Theatre Jacques Lecoq
I was very lucky to recieve a place in the second year and am one semester in. My lifelong dream come true. However to finish my second year I need help.
Lecoq is a private school with no funding available. I managed to save up enough to cover my fees until now, however I still have two terms to go and my funds have run dry. If I don't get this term's fees - 2490euros (approximately £2220) together by Easter I may be unable to complete the course.
Before I started Lecoq last year I'd lost confidence in myself as a performer. I've always been shy and struggled with self-esteem since the unexpected death of my father when I was ten. At University I began to focus on directing and writing, but my work with the Bristol Old Vic made me realise that if I wanted to create collaborative theatre I needed to be able to perform.
The first year at Lecoq has transformed me. The pedagogy is rigorous, harsh and critical, but with that comes a degree of nurturing rarely found in education. The teachers push us to do impossible things because they believe we can achieve them. The combination of tough physical training and strict nurturing has left me with no room for self-doubt. I am a performer. This is the first time I've been able to say that with confidence and belief, and it has brought me to a point where I know that I can make the work I dream of making.
For me, theatre is a way to open a conversation, a tool for social change. I want to make work which challenges and confronts, which gives voice to the voices we so rarely get to hear. I want to contribute, to make a difference. I believe that I can, through theatre, through playing, and through enabling others to speak and to play. To do this, I need your help.
Any pennies or pounds you can chuck my way will go directly towards paying my fees, enabling me to complete my training. I know it's a lot to ask but any help would be so much appreciated, and I promise one day I'll make it worth your while!
