This month (August 2020) was my little sister Rita's annual mammogram. To our shock she was told that her 2006 breast cancer has returned for the 2nd time. Since that day, we’ve started the process of understanding the fight we have ahead and what we can do to support Rita in keeping her energy and focus on treatment. As we are grateful for many years of survival, preparations for treatment with numerous doctor’s visits, blood draws and scans begins.
We do know that a double mastectomy will be completed by the end of August due to the critical need to remove the cancer. The Covid-19 of course has priority with this decision, along with doctors being able to move from hospital to hospital in Augusta. She will not have family with her during this process in the hospital because of Covid-19 rules. Please pray for that to change!!!
After the double mastectomy she will have reconstructive surgery. That will be based on her mastectomy recovery. So yes, that means more surgery.
Here's the important part. As it stands August 25, 2020 we are still unclear if she will need chemotherapy. We do know radiation is NOT an option due to the damage from the first battle of cancer.
Additionally, Rita will have a long year ahead of cancer-related expenses not covered by insurance like co-pays, transportation and time away from work. Although we don’t have an exact number of how much all of this will cost, we know it will be well north of the goal we are trying to raise.
Anyone who has ever spent time with Rita knows what an incredible person she is. Loving, selfless and radiating contagious positivity, Rita has been a true friend to so many and supported others throughout her life. Rita is the type of person who would never ask for financial help, so as her sister I'm asking on her behalf. While Rita has always been there for her family and friends, now she needs all of us to show up and support her.
Simply put - your donation could help save Rita's battle a little more easier and a burden lifted . Whatever you can give would help make a difference in her grueling fight against cancer. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
