Helping Karen: A Champion for Home Care Workers
Donation protected
Years ago, a small group of brave caregivers decided to stand together to fight for dignity and respect for themselves, their profession, and their consumers. Karen Goroncy was one of these caregivers, and her commitment has led to the creation of Pennsylvania's home care union.
Karen has been a core leader in the union since the very beginning. She was a founding member of the union at TRPIL and has served on the bargaining committee for every single contract negotiation. She has been a core leader within the our healthcare campaign, first fighting to bring Medicaid expansion to Pennsylvania and then to protect the ACA. She can be counted on to attend every single lobby day or rally. Throughout it all, she always puts her consumer, Larry, front and center and focuses on the need to make sure everyone can live at home with dignity.
In early December, Karen was in a terrible car accident. She faces a challenging and long recovery period. Additionally, she will be unable to work for at least 10 weeks. Not surprisingly, her first concern was Larry; instead of prioritizing her needs she was very concerned about how Larry would get the care he needs and how much she missed him.
And as much as Karen has led the fight to improve home care jobs, there is still much more investment needed. Karen is facing a loss of her income during this time and does not have health insurance. We are asking our union brothers and sisters to please contribute generously to help Karen make it through this time and come back to us stronger than ever.
