Helping Hands for Haley
Donation protected
Some of you may know my dear friend Katie Welte. She is the most generous friend and amazing mother to her twin girls. One of the twins, Haley, has had a rough medical journey since birth. In 2011 Katie was able to donate one of her kidneys to Haley which was a success.
On May 22 Haley was admitted at Lurie’s Children’s Hospital for a persistent fever. After a week and a half of testing and a biopsy she was diagnosed with Histoplasmosis, a fungal infection in her lungs. She subsequently went into respiratory failure and has been intubated for nearly three weeks. She is close to coming off the vent but she still has a long road ahead after that big step. Thankfully her kidney is holding strong through all of this, especially while on anti-fungal medications which are toxic to the kidneys.
Katie would give anyone the shirt off her back and I’m sure all that know her can attest to what a selfless human being she is.
Katie has been off work for the last 3 weeks, only receiving half her usual pay so that she can be at Haley’s side. My hope is that in starting this campaign we can off set any financial burden she might be feeling. Parking at Lurie’s is $11/day if she drives and I’m sure finding a decent meal to eat everyday can add up. If you cannot donate, prayers are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
