Our dear friend Wanda Tischer needs our help! Many of you know her from her work with children as a Social Worker for the County of San Diego or at Polinsky Children's Center; many of you also may know her from the marathon and tennis communities of San Diego, and throughout the State of California. As many of you know, Wanda had a very serious traumatic accident on Saturday, July 11. Although Wanda is an experienced rider, she was thrown off her bike while bicycling on an off road bike path; an inexperienced rider cut her off, causing Wanda to crash. She was projected approximately 8 feet, landing on construction debris. The construction debris caused severe abdominal trauma. Wanda lost consciousness at the scene
Once rescued by paramedics from the bike path, she was brought to a local trauma center, where she was rushed in to emergency surgery to begin repairs on her abdomen. In the last 4 weeks, she's experienced numerous complications, resulting in the need to return to the operating room 3 more times (4 surgeries total). At this time, she is in need of financial support from the community to help cover her extensive medical bills, and living expenses (her home for herself and her son, car payment, food, etc). Due to this injury, she has not worked since July 10; since she is not working, she no longer has employer sponsored health insurance. Because she has worked in the last month (before the accident), she is also not eligible at this time for state sponsored insurance (hopefully next month she will be!). She has exhausted vacation/sick leave balances, and has no income at this time. State Disability will likely take another 4-8 weeks to begin receiving payments, however, will not be nearly enough to cover her medical co-pays.
Wanda is going to have a LONG road to recovery. Today's victory was that she stood and took a few steps in the hospital. She will have to continue vigorous physical therapy to rehabilitate. The hope is that in 3-5 months she will be able to walk again normally, and potentially in 9-12 months she can begin jogging/running again... but this is an estimate, with no guarantees.
Your support for our dear friend is greatly appreciated! Any amount will help. Also, regardless of your ability to support her monetarily, please continue to send her healing energy, positive thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
