URGENT HELP NEEDED FOR MEDICAL EXPENSES!!

Hughie is  52 years old.
The health care system across this country has failed him time and again. Now he needs your help.
This is his story.
Sorry if it's long.....

November 2019, while working at the mines in Yukon, Hughie slipped off a D-10 bulldozer and hit his head. The infirmary at the mine checked him out and sent
him back to camp. The following day he was  complaining of severe pain. It was
too foggy or snowy (differing stories) to fly him to Whitehorse hospital so they
put him in a pick up truck for the three and a half  hour journey. He had a
dislocated shoulder and was wearing a neck brace. A scan was done at
Whitehorse Hospital and a Doctor in Vancouver cleared him to leave. While
standing outside  the Hospital waiting for his ride home, Hughie suffered a
massive stroke. Since Whitehorse Hospital can not deal with stroke patients, he
was immediately flown to Vancouver hospital. Hughie was recovering well for the week.
Then came that Sunday afternoon when Hughie began to complain about not        being able to breathe...like his chest was being crushed. A team of Doctors
worked on him steadily as his condition worsened. He could not breath. He
became paralyzed to the point where he couldnt even blink on his own. He was
quickly  intubated and put on a ventilator where he remained for a number of
weeks. It took Doctors over a week to finally realize that Hughie had developed
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) , a rare condition in which a person's immune
system attacks the peripheral  nerves.

Remember, this is in Vancouver. Hughies family is in Ontario. Hes all alone. He       needs to be near family.

Three months into his ordeal, The Yukon no longer wants to pay his medical bills  and since he was not a resident of B.C., neither did they. Vancouver Hospital            called Hughies sister in Brampton and informed her that there is nothing more      they  can do for him and were going to put him away in a nursing home. He could  not  feed himself, wash himself or do anything for himself. Although he was able to talk again  and  could move one arm at this point.

Hughies sister, Brenda, promptly made her way to Vancouver to advocate for her brother. With her daily visits to the Hospital and her constant insistence that they do more for him, Hughie soon began to make progress. He could sit up. He could  use his tablet. He could feed himself. There was a very long road ahead but he was making progress. All the while, Brenda was also working on a way to get Hughie   back to Ontario. The Angels of Flight are the best organization for this but their    cost is still a whopping $48,000.00!!

Then Covid-19 hit.

Brenda could no longer visit Hughie in the hospital. He felt abandoned and alone once again. Finally, a bed opened up for Hughie in Brampton hospital, but before  his transfer arrangement could be made, they gave the bed away to someone else.
Ultimately, Brenda managed to get Hughie back to home to Brampton Hospital,
but was still unable to visit. Her unwavering commitment to his health and
recovery triumphed and Hughies recovery continued. He required a lot of
physiotherapy and he worked very hard. They had him standing with a walker and soon he was able to use a wheelchair and move himself around with one leg.
Things were looking good! So good, in fact, that the Hospital felt it was time to
move him to a nursing home to further recover.
Within 3 days of the move, he was back in the hospital with an obstructed bowel. The hospital knew of this before they shipped him to the home. Paramedics took him to the hospital but the family had to foot the over $300 bill to transport him
the 10 minutes back to the home. Once he returned, his 14 day Covid quarantine started all over again. He is allowed visitors at his window....he loves getting visits!

Because of Covid, Hughie can no longer receive his physiotherapy. He can no
longer stand up. He can no longer get himself to his wheelchair.

Hughies sister has been dealing with many government agencies to try and get
Hughie some income but has hit a roadblock at every turn. The lawyers are now
involved but that may take years before there is any resolution. meanwhile,
Hughies bills keep piling up.

Brenda has made 4 trips to Vancouver and one to the Yukon in January  to have all his personal belongings taken back to Ontario. She stayed a hotel at first, then at her cousins and finally at a Firefighters funded burn victim residence in
Vancouver. She has had to take out a line of credit on her own house to cover all of the expenses that she has incurred dealing with Hughies well being.
Hughies Mother has had to refer to her retirement savings to help where she can but has her own health issues and expense while dealing with stage 4 bone
cancer. The toll on her has been immense.

Hughie has ongoing expenses that he has every month. He is sitting alone and in
pain in a single room day after day, week after week...deteriorating. And he has no
income. A private physiotherapist would not only aid in his physical recovery but would also be a huge boost to his social needs. A friend.

Please dig deep and make sure that Hughie gets the help he needs in order to
recover from this horrible infliction. Show him that there is hope and that he is
not going to waste away and be forgotten. Hughie and his family need your help.
