My Darling Son Malique
On Labor day 2019 my son was injured in a life altering accident, he dove in a lake not knowing it was shallow, due to no warning signs posted. Because of this he suffered irreversible spinal cord injury, specifically he fractured cervical spine 5 and 6. The Cervical portion of the spine comprises the top portion of the spinal cord, consisting of seven vertebrae (C1 - C7) in the neck. Being closer to the brain and affecting a larger portion of the body, cervical spinal cord injuries are typically the most severe variety of spinal cord injury. If there is an injury in the cervical area, it will result in tetraplegia/quadriplegia, meaning there is limited or absent feeling or movement below the shoulders/neck. Cervical spine injuries often involve permanent complete or partial loss of sensory function, and many associated complications.
Because of this new life with this injury as a quadriplegic Malique will need highly specialized medical equipment for day to day life for the remainder of his life. Once previously healthy independent 21yr old will now need rehabilitation to focus on learning to use the non-paralyzed portions of the body to regain varying levels of autonomy. Malique will also require permanent, 24-hour care for the remainder of his life.
Like many working mothers I could not afford to have Malique on my medical insurance plan, so with this tragedy he is nonfunded, and we have amassed massive medical debt since the accident, with more to come with our new reality, but I as his mother am more focused on his much needed rehab therapy as well as making him as comfortable as possible with his needed medical equipment. All donations and prayers are welcomed and even the smallest donations count and can make a difference.
