Hi, my name is Matthew Gallivan. I live in Hamburg NY. Early in October, while working at his clinic, my brother Tim noticed a bit of shoulder pain. Within 6 hours, he was paralyzed from the waist down due to a rare neurological condition called transverse myelitis. There were no warning signs.
Transverse myelitis is an inflammation of both sides of one section of the spinal cord. This neurological disorder often damages the insulating material covering nerve cell fibers (myelin). Transverse myelitis interrupts the messages that the spinal cord nerves send throughout the body. This can cause pain, muscle weakness, paralysis, sensory problems, or bladder and bowel dysfunction.
Tim is a chiropractor living and serving the community of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. He has two young daughters, ages 3 and 6.
After 3 weeks of being bed bound in an ICU unit, he was released and was told he would not walk again. He was left with a substantial hospital bill, the majority of it paid off. He is now unable to work due to his condition and recovery is a slow process, but due to his hard work and determination, Tim is proving the doctors wrong.
Tim has spent his career serving and helping others. Now he needs financial help while he recovers and gets back on his feet, literally. Due to Covid, he cannot travel and his wife lost her job as well, creating another stress on his recovery. Although we realize the idea of asking for help is a painful one for him, he needs it.
Vietnam is an unsupported country for Go Fund Me. This means that the money raised would have to go to a person who manages the Go Fund Me account from a supported country, (United States), then transferred to Tim in Vietnam. With that said, I would deposit all the proceeds into an account in my name that I activated solely for the purpose of this Go Fund Me campaign. Once the money is transferred to Tim, I would close the account.
We are asking for assistance for the remainder of his hospital bill and to cover his expenses going forward while he recovers and is able to work again. With your support he can focus on his recovery and get back to what he does best, helping others. Any amount is much appreciated.
