Help Unemployed Workers in Playa and Families in Most Need of Help During this Crisis
Hi, I’m Dan Palka, owner and operator of a tour business here in Playa del Carmen called VIP Riviera Maya. I am, like many other businesses in this area on Mexico’s Caribbean called the Riviera Maya, completely shut down and out of work due to the global pandemic of the Coronavirus.
This area relies heavily on tourism. Right now, approximately 75 resorts and hotels are now closed, all tour operators have had to shut down, and about 80% of the population is unemployed and struggling to make ends meet with the savings they have. That’s why I’m initiating this effort to try to help raise money for the hospitality industry workers here and also families in great need.
My goal is to reach $5,000 USD and my plan is to take the money and go buy prepaid grocery cards to deliver to hospitality workers with no income at this time so they can at least buy the essentials they need to help get them through the self-isolation at home and keep a roof over their heads. I also plan to buy some buy some essentials and daily staples to pack bags of goods to deliver to the more remote Mayan communities through this effort as well.
I’ve lived in Playa for over 10 years and I just want to do my part to give back. I’ve worked as a tour operator for years and I feel for my own employees who now have no work and others in this community, many who live paycheck to paycheck in these tourist towns. I want to come together as a community and help each other as we’re all in this together.
We’re all concerned for our health and ability to sustain a decent way of life through this awful crisis and I am willing to take the time and resources to accomplish this mission. I just need some collaboration and a pay-it-forward attitude to get the donations to help me help them. I know it’s a tough time for everybody, but any little extra we can all collectively spare would go a long way to help others.
Thank you so much in advance and to get the word to spread faster, please share the link to your Facebook Timeline! It will get the word to spread faster and food and essentials to people really in need. And let’s all pray this problem dies down sooner than later.
