My dear friend, Marlena, and her family have been through a lot in the past year. While driving carpool for her daughter and several children, Marlena was hit head on by an uninsured motorist. As a result of the accident, Marlena has to have back surgery and is in constant pain. Her husband is self-employed and does not have health insurance that will cover this surgery. Expected costs will total approximately $300,000. The only asset the family has that could help with this cost is their family home where they have raised their four daughters. A realtor friend suggested they update their kitchen to raise the value of their home so the Wilzbachs hired a contractor to remodel their outdated kitchen. The contractor began working on the project in November by demolishing their cabinets, etc. After a few weeks the contractor stopped showing up to work on their kitchen. Little did they know that this particular contractor has done this many times to other unsuspecting families, taking their money but not finishing the work. He also used unlicensed plumbers and electricians which has caused a safety hazard in their home. They have had to use the money they had set aside for the remodel, less the money they've already paid the contractor, to have the wiring and plumbing fixed as well as to create a makeshift kitchen sink so they can function in their home. Not knowing where else to turn, Marlena contacted NBC Responds who decided to run this story on my friend.
