Helping the Salisbury family
Donation protected
Graham Salisbury and Subzero – or Subbie to most – were tireless in their work for communities across Australia and famously loved and recognized as the unique duo that they were around the world.
Yes Subzero wrote himself into the Australian racing iconography by winning the 1992 Melbourne Cup but it was when Graham bought him for $1 with the promise to owners of making him “The People’s Horse”, that the remarkable story truly began.
From countless visits to schools and retirement homes, from hospices for the sick, old and young, to pubs and hotels and charity events globally, Graham and Subbie eternally etched themselves into the hearts and souls of communities everywhere.
Hollywood stars like Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, supermodels like Kylie Bax, Prime Ministers like John Howard, all got up close and personal with Graham and Subbie, but it was in the eyes and faces and hearts of the kids, fans, the elderly, that the real measure of their appeal was truly felt.
Now they are both gone, so fondly remembered, but leaving behind their Heathcote farm and Graham’s wife Anita, and incapacitated daughter Nikki struggling to maintain it.
There are horses still to be cared for, especially Graham’s prized racemare Norsika who hopefully will provide a living memory after being served by the Japanese bred stallion Tosen Stardom (thanks to a donated nomination).
There is a working property to be upkept, work that had always been done by Graham, and this is all too much for Anita, virtually on her own.
Graham gave so much of his time and passion with sharing Subbie for next to nothing. Now we are hoping Subbie’s fans who shared such generosity can return that for the remaining Salisbury family, so they can remain on Subbie and Graham’s home and truly honour a remarkable memory.
