Helping the Road to Recovery

June 7, my husband Jason was in an accident where high voltage electricity caused severe 3rd and 2nd degree burns to his entire left leg, right thigh and abdomen areas totaling about 20% of his skin. He is recovering well considering his injuries; but his recovery will be long and challenging.

Jason was immediately airlifted from Temple, TX to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio – the leading center for the care of severely burned military personnel and civilians. Already he has had surgeries to clean and excise the burned tissue as well as perform the first layers of skin grafts.

Jason has done very well throughout these painful procedures. His unique sense of humor has helped keep things in perspective and made him one of the favorite patients in the burn unit. His determination has carried him through the torture of physical therapy. Thankfully, the hospital focuses on physical therapy from the beginning since circulation is so important for healthy tissue to reform. Standing and walking without pain are our long term goals. Although normal flexibility and movement would be wonderful at the end of all this, and we keep hope open for this.

Jason will likely remain hospitalized in San Antonio for several more weeks, where the focus will be on ensuring the grafted tissue remains viable. He will be working with physical and occupational therapists who specialize in severe burn recovery to minimize muscle/strength loss and improve flexibility as the grafts and burned tissue continue to heal.

Jason will then need considerable time in rehab to help determine what his functional ability will be. Additional surgeries will also be needed to further help repair damage. In total, we are looking at six months to a year before we reach a new life equilibrium, so we find ourselves in day six of a long journey with an uncertain outcome.

Since Jason will require full time care, and I will be his primary caregiver and wound care person, both of our incomes will take a major hit. As you all know, life and bills continue in sickness and in health. I have set up this GoFundMe site to allow anyone who feels comfortable to share what they can to help with travel/living costs between Waco and San Antonio, and out of pocket medical-related expenses. We will need to remodel parts of our home to make it accessible as he will be disabled for the foreseeable future. We have very good health insurance, thankfully, but his injuries are so extensive and recovery time so long, coupled with our reduced income, uncovered medical-related expenses, like wound care and home modifications will be very high.

We never know what will happen in life. Treasure your loved ones and live life fully every day.

Thank you for your help.

Please keep Jason, me, and our 4 kids in your prayers,
Jenny
