Most of you reading this, will by now be aware of Veeran's health situation and for those who don't, in true Veeran fashion... here is the elevator pitch:
A few years ago he was diagnosed with PKD (polycystic kidney disease), at the time of his diagnoses his kidney's were running at 42% and in a few short years they have dropped to 8%. Now at age 44, he recently has started daily dyalisis, with his only option for improvement being a transplant.
I have been Bec's boss for the past three years, but more importantly, she is one of my best friends, so I have been privliged to have had a front row seat to the weekly updates of the unfolding health story. As with many serious diagnosis there is no cookie cutter path to follow and no black and white answers from the many health professionals they have seen. Privately Veeran and Bec have been navigating the minefield of doctors and advice.
A little over a year ago Bec told me “I’ve decided I’m going to investigate me donating a kidney”
At the time I shrugged and subconsciously thought ‘surely it isn’t as serious as all that’. As the months have passed by and as Veeran’s kidneys deteriorated I watch Bec become more and more worried about their future. They have a wonderful life and amazing small family (with a glorious 5 year old daughter and a cheeky 3 year old son) they have built together, and there is a very real possibility that Veeran would not be around to experience it in the future.
In the beginning it was looking like Bec was not an option for a donor and that they would have to wait to have even lower kidney function then go on the public list with an unknown time
on dialysis waiting for the transplant. Then suddenly at the start of this year, they received the news from a doctor that they would be able to start testing Bec to donate.
Over the the last few months Bec has had countless tests and appointments and has had to chase doctors every step of the way to be able to do this. This is not a decision made lightly by either of them. And now the surgery is booked for 1st October.
Around the studio there is a theory that Bec’s motives may be a little more selfish... I did inform her that she will be able to win every marital argument forever with the ultimate comeback “I gave you a frigin kidney!”
But in all seriousness, it is a major operation for both of them, and they will be recovering at the same time. I have been contacted a lot by the couples family and friends to see how they can help in any way.
The facts are; Veeran’s parents have come over from New Zealand so will have the day to day practicalities covered, we have worked out a roster of taking the kids to school, care and days out so that is also good.
If you are wanting to help, what would be really handy, is a small chip in to help cover their bills and mortgage over the two months that they will both be recovering. As you all know, Veeran is self employed and Bec works for me on a casual basis so they will have next to no money coming in during their recovery. They were very reluctant to take hand outs but after so many people asking how to help, they have realised it would take some off the stress off them to know they don’t have to put a hardship pause on their mortgage. So it really is the most practical way people can help.
The Naran’s have always had a positive outlook on life and this whole experience has been no different. They are proud people and it did take a lot for them to agree to this fund me page, however it is a true testament to them that so many people want to help them out.
Thanks for reading this and as the operation takes place on the 1st of October I’ll keep everyone updated with how it all goes so the couple don’t feel pressured to message everyone back straight easy whilst they are recovering.
Much love,
gillian
