On February 19, 2022, Project Rebound’s beloved community member and scholar, Michael Kruger, died due to a tragic accident.

Michael joined Project Rebound at CSU Fullerton in 2019, and was set to graduate in May with honors. He recently was awarded the John Irwin Academic Excellence Scholarship, and had been admitted to begin earning his Master’s Degree in the Fall. Michael made use of every second with us. He was the President of the Rebound Scholars student organization. He was one of Project Rebound’s student assistants, corresponding with and serving as a lifeline for incarcerated people across California seeking the transformative power of higher education, and helping to matriculate them into the CSU system. Michael was also a resident and core community member of Project Rebound's John Irwin House, the first transformative housing community for formerly incarcerated university students in the nation.

 

 

 

 

Michael radiated gratitude, joy, love, and care. He supported his colleagues, classmates, housemates, and friends in everything they did. Always smiling, Michael truly made everyone around him know he was there for them without expecting anything in return.

 

Michael's loss is a tragedy for his parents, Fred and Peggy, his brother, John, and the wider Project Rebound family. His family and ours will undoubtedly struggle with his loss for years to come.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

During this time of grief and mourning, we do not want Michael's family to shoulder the burden of this tragedy alone.
