Tania Zamora Estrada is an energetic, enthusiastic and joyful 16-year-old, she has goals and dreams like all teenage girls. Tania had been very healthy her entire life, so it was very shocking to her family when on August 7th, 2019 she started having difficulty seeing. Her mom, Ana, took her to see an ophthalmologist thinking she needed glasses. Two weeks later she could no longer see objects clearly, even with the glasses.
The ophthalmologist recommended they see a retinologist. On August 27th Dr. Arturo Macias diagnosed loss of visual acuity due to fluid accumulation in the brain causing hydrocephalus. This was followed by 3 very stressful days of tests, CAT scans and medication. On August 30th she had to be rushed to the ER because she lost consciousness. After an MRI she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the pineal gland. The tumor is pressing the optical nerve, so Tania has completely lost her sight.
On September 1st Tania was transferred to La Paz because the treatment she needed was not available in Los Cabos where she lives. On September 3rd she had to have a shunt valve implanted in her brain in order to alleviate the hydrocephalus.
Her family sought the opinion of several experts and the consensus was that the best possible treatment was localized radiotherapy. The hope is that with this treatment will reduce the size of the tumor and free the optical nerve. They also have to determine if the tumor is malignant and to control that it does not spread.
So far, the hardest was Christmas day, on December 25th the tumor started affecting the central nervous system. Tania is week and very tired, she has lost mobility on her left arm and leg.
Tania’s treatment is being provided by IMSS (Mexican Social Service) a system that is sadly underfunded and saturated. After 4 months waiting, they finally, started her treatment on December 30th, she will have 30 sessions of radiotherapy. Unfortunately, she had to travel again in order to receive treatment. This time to Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, the regional hospital there is the closest location where she can receive treatment.
We hope that after she completes the 30 radiotherapy sessions, she will be able to start working on her rehabilitation, learn to walk and to see again. The truth is that the path is still a bit uncertain.
Tania has strong emotional support from her family and friends, she is surrounded by people who love her and have faith in her recovery. However, the financial situation has become difficult. Both her parents work in sales and receive only commissions, having to travel to take care of Tania means her mother is unable to work. We are not sure how long it will be until she can return to work. Tania’s dad is still working and taking care of her two younger sisters (7 & 9 years old).
Asking for financial help is never easy, but we hope our community will support this amazing family that is going through a difficult time. Ana, Tania’s mom, is a well-known, loved and respected member of the community in Los Cabos. Edgar, Tania’s dad, is an incredible artist who works diligently in his gallery to support his family.
Some of the urgent expenses they have are:
Traveling and living expenses while in Sonora for radiotherapy, IMSS only cover’s Tania’s and her mom’s airfare. The rest has to be paid by them. This means hotel, meals, flights for her dad in case of emergencies, etc. A wheelchair for Tania. Psychological therapy to help her deal with everything that is going on. Extraocular vision therapy and medicines not available through IMSS amongst others. All of these extra expenses coupled with the lack of income have finally made them decide to ask for help.
We ask that you donate if you can, any amount helps. You can also share and help us spread the word. Visiting Tania’s dad gallery in San Jose del Cabo and buying some art is also a great way to help.
As a mother I know how difficult it must be for Ana and Edgar, as parents, to deal with everything life has thrown at them but I also know we, as a community, can help them so they can focus on caring for their daughters and reduce some of the stress they have.

Many of you may not know this but it is not possible to directly withdraw the funds into a Mexican Bank so we are very grateful to Claudio for stepping in to make sure the money can get to the intended beneficiary.

El oftalmólogo recomendó ver a un retinólogo. El 27 de agosto, el Dr. Arturo Macías diagnosticó pérdida de agudeza visual debido a la acumulación de líquido en el cerebro que causa hidrocefalia. Esto fue seguido por 3 días muy estresantes de pruebas, tomografías computarizadas y medicamentos. El 30 de agosto tuvo que ser llevada a urgencias porque perdió el conocimiento. Después de una resonancia magnética, le diagnosticaron un tumor cerebral en la glándula pineal. El tumor está presionando el nervio óptico, por lo que Tania ha perdido completamente la vista.
El 1 de septiembre, Tania fue trasladada a La Paz porque el tratamiento que necesitaba no estaba disponible en Los Cabos, donde vive. El 3 de septiembre tuvieron que implantar una válvula de derivación en su cerebro para aliviar la hidrocefalia.
Su familia buscó la opinión de varios expertos y el consenso fue que el mejor tratamiento posible era la radioterapia localizada. La esperanza es que este tratamiento reducirá el tamaño del tumor y liberará el nervio óptico. También tienen que determinar si el tumor es maligno y controlar que no se propague.
Hasta ahora, lo más difícil fue el día de Navidad, el 25 de diciembre el tumor comenzó a afectar el sistema nervioso central. Tania tiene se siente muy débil y cansada, ha perdido movilidad en su brazo y pierna izquierdos.
El tratamiento de Tania está siendo provisto por el IMSS (Servicio Social Mexicano), un sistema que está tristemente mal financiado y saturado. Después de 4 meses de espera, finalmente, comenzaron su tratamiento el 30 de diciembre, va a recibir 30 sesiones de radioterapia. Desafortunadamente, tuvo que viajar nuevamente para recibir tratamiento. Esta vez a Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, el hospital regional, es el lugar más cercano donde puede recibir tratamiento.
Esperamos que después de completar las 30 sesiones de radioterapia, pueda comenzar a trabajar en su rehabilitación, aprender a caminar de nuevo y volver a ver. La verdad es que el camino aún es un poco incierto.
Tania tiene fuerte apoyo emocional de su familia y amigos, está rodeada de personas que la aman y tienen fe en su recuperación. Sin embargo, la situación financiera se ha vuelto difícil. Sus padres trabajan en ventas y solo reciben comisiones. Tener que viajar para cuidar a Tania significa que su madre no puede trabajar. No estamos seguros de cuánto tiempo pasará hasta que ella pueda volver a trabajar. El padre de Tania todavía está trabajando y cuidando a sus dos hermanas menores (de 7 y 9 años).

Todos estos gastos adicionales, junto con la falta de ingresos, finalmente los han hecho decidir pedir ayuda.
