In mid June Susannah Southgate was rushed into hospital with severe abdominal pain. She had emergency surgery that day for a hemicolectomy and a large portion of her intestines and a tumor were removed. The tumor proved to be benign, but without this surgery she would have died.
In the weeks following Susannah developed severe complications and infections and underwent two further life saving emergency surgeries, and a whole series of invasive procedures.
She was hospitalized for an entire month. It was a depleting experience for Susannah and there were multiple times when we were afraid of losing her. We, two of her close local friends, sat by her side during this journey and became her caregivers and advocates. Witnessing her ordeal was a wrenching experience.
In mid-July, Susannah arrived home. She was extremely unwell at first but she is now slowly improving. However, her journey is by no means over. She requires 24/7 care, is on extreme pain meds, attends numerous medical appointments; and it is clear she will not be able to resume normal life or work for some time.
Even with health insurance, her medical bills and care costs are escalating, and are already exceeding $50,000. These are daunting costs for anyone, but particularly for a single parent. We also know Susannah has had no income since Covid lockdown began, and it will be quite some time before she is able to work again.
So, this is where we come in! We would like to relieve some of the financial burden for Susannah by providing a platform for people to contribute. It’s not about the amount, but let's make Susannah feel loved and supported on her way to recovery.
And, if money donations are not possible, your prayers, well wishes and healing love are equally appreciated.
