Help Sergio & family with his kidney transplant

Donation protected
Hello my name is Kathy (Ashdown) and I am Sergio’s sister in law. This GoFundMe is to help my BIL and my sister Victoria with housing, out of pocket medical expenses and covering monthly expenses while he is recovering after his kidney transplant on June 9th, 2023. This has been a long road and here is their story: Sergio first got sick and diagnosed in 2011, started dialysis, and placed on a transplant list. Sergio decided on dialysis at home so he could keep working and provide for his family. At that time he was the main provider for the family. He continued with the nightly dialysis hooked up for 10 hours each night over the next 12 years so that he could live as much of a normal life as possible. Sergio was able to work until August of 2020 when he began permanent disability. He had to increase his dialysis to 2 x a day since his kidneys no longer worked at all. To add to their troubles in March of 2021 Sergio had to have 1 of his kidneys removed due to being diagnosed with kidney cancer. He was then placed on hold for two long years (due to standard cancer protocol with possible transplant recipients) you can’t have active cancer and receive a new organ. Finally Sergio was moved to the front of the transplant list as of the spring of 2023. After two close calls and being a backup donor he received THE phone call and his long awaited kidney transplant 6/9/2023. The surgery took 4 hours and he had to stay a couple days in the hospital to make sure he was out of harms way of rejection. Sergio & Victoria are now required to stay within close proximity to the hospital for the next 30 days having follow up appointments 2 times a week. Since they live in Winchester and Scripps Institute is located in La Jolla they must stay at a hotel for the first 30 days. Insurance does not cover their housing, meals, fuel and other out of pocket costs. Victoria has been the main provider for the family over the past three years and she needs to be with Sergio this entire time while he recuperates and the new kidney stabilizes. They also have 4 children who were 7, 9, 11 and 13 when this began and are trying to help at home between jobs, school, and life. Sergio and Victoria will be required to travel once a week in the second month and every other week in the 3rd month for labs and kidney functioning test staying a couple days each visit. If all goes well with a good recovery and kidney function he may return back to work eventually. If you see it in your heart to offer prayers, share this GoFundMe, and/or be able to donate Sergio and Tori would be greatly indebted and extremely appreciative. This has been a long time coming and they are in the home stretch God willing. (To top all of this our dad had a bad fall on 5/28 and broke his hip, had surgery on 5/29, was in the hospital for 1 week, and now has been in a nursing home since 6/5. It has been a lot for everyone to keep up with to be honest). Thank you for your consideration and anything you are able to help or provide for the family. Funds will be directly withdrawn by Victoria only. Much love, Kathy
