Our friend and sister Sandra Monroe, the founder of the Saints Bar and Collective in Boston as well longtime Michfest Coordinator, was in a terrible auto accident last April while trying to avoid hitting a deer. Both her ankles were broken, both her feet were smashed one of her vertebrae was crushed. She was in the hospital for 3 months, she had three surgeries, and then was in a rehab facility for another 3 months after that. We did a GoFundMe last November to help pay her bills because her Social Security had been taken to pay hospital co-pays and Rehab Bills, and her bills at home mounted up as she had neither her SSI or her part time job. With your generous love and help we did pay many of the household bills that had built up over that time. Sandy was so grateful and overwhelmed by not only your financial support, but also by all your loving messages.
Sandy was able to go home for a time, but was suffering unbearable pain every time she tried to walk. It was eventually determined by her doctor that the surgeries on her ankles had not worked, but he thought based on her scans that he could go back in with a different approach and fix what went wrong. In December Sandy had two more surgeries, one on each ankle and has been back in the rehab facility recovering since then. She is now able to get around with a walker and a wheel chair and is scheduled to go home on May 19th.
Her car was totaled in the accident last spring and though we had hoped to raise enough money last fall to get her a used car to replace it, we raised just enough to help her catch up on the bills. So we are reaching out again with this new GoFundMe campaign to help her now, so that she will have a car when she is home to be able to go to the store and hopefully back to her part time job once the country opens up again. We realize so many people are needing help right now, but if you know Sandy and were touched by her love and generosity either at the Saints in Boston or during the many years she and the Saints Collective ran concessions at the festival, any amount you could share with her would be so appreciated
Sandra Monroe has given her life and love to the Saints Collective, to Michfest and to lesbian culture. I am calling for us to give back to our sister and friend again when she needs us, not only financially, but also personally, to let her know our love for her and everything she has given to our community.
Merry Moscato is in charge of finding her a car, so If you see any good deals in West Virginia or nearby where Sandy lives, or near central Florida where Merry lives, feel free to send a link to Merry. Or if you have a used car you want to sell or donate, let us know about that too.
Our love and gratitude to all, Sutree, Merry and Cheryl.
