SADDLES IN SERVICE (HEROES ~ HORSES ~ HEALING)
Saddles In Service at Storm Son's Ranch Equine Therapy and Horse Rescue is a Veteran founded non-profit (established 2017) promoting wellness and healing for our community's Heroes and Horses at absolutely no cost to participants! Who are our Heroes? They are the Veterans, Active Duty Military, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMTs and their families who have given so much in service to our country and local communities. WHY DID WE START THIS FOUNDATION?
The answer is simple, it is because of the amazing men and women who answer the call to serve our nation and our communities! Suicide rates for law enforcement and fire fighters are on the rise. The suicide rate for veterans is 22 PER DAY! These numbers continue to rise even with increased awareness. Something more needs to be done to lower these numbers. We founded Saddles In Service to help our Heroes who may feel anxious, depressed, angry or isolated. A recent study by Baylor University found that veterans with combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder were less anxious and depressed and had an improved quality of life after participating in a therapeutic horseback riding program.
OUR PROGRAM
Saddles In Service is our Equine Assisted Therapy Program offered at NO COST to our Heroes and their families. Saddles In Service is where we bring together Horse and Hero. They both learn to trust and respect one another through grooming, groundwork, and riding which brings peace and a sense of purpose to both our Heroes and Horses. Our Heroes have stated that our program has provided them with increased confidence and patience as well as gratitude, hope and camaraderie.
WHY WE HELP RESCUE HORSES
There are many non-profit Horse Rescues that rescue horses each week from neglectful situations and slaughter auctions. They rescue and rehabilitate as many horses as they can. But many of these non-profits need help finding good homes for their rescued horses. This is where we come in to help. Saddles In Service takes in rescue horses, rehabilitates and trains them to give them a purpose through our program. We look for neglected horses who will be great companions to our heroes. We give these horses a new life and purpose while helping support other local non-profits.
GROWING DEMANDS AND NEEDS
Our program has grown exponentially in the last several months and the demand is outpacing our ability to provide this amazing service to our Heroes and Horses. We have gone from helping 10 Heroes at the beginning of the year to over 187 in the last 4 months! Of those new Heroes, we are serving 10 children of Heroes that have been diagnosed with Autism, depression, anxiety and other disabilities. We currently host veterans from Operation Homefront monthly. We have also increased our herd of rescued horses from 2 rescued horses to 10! In order to keep up with the demand, we must build additional infrastructure and bring in additional Rescue Horses to our program (that has not been able to be done due to a lack of funding). There are significant operating costs (feed, property lease, vehicle lease, vehicle maintenance, saddles and tack). It costs approximately $1,500 a month just to feed our herd of Horses. All donations will help with caring and feeding the horses for the next year, 2019, including farrier, regular veterinarian care and emergency veterinary services. In addition, our infrastructure needs include building 5 horse shelters, digging an additional well/water tank, additional solar panels, office, 2 new covered round pens, a covering for our arena, new fencing, and construction work to run water and power to all of the stalls. We are located in a High Fire Zone in California so we also need to purchase 3 stock horse trailers and 2 trucks in order to be able to evacuate at a moments notice. An additional generator and professional hookup are needed for when we lose power during emergency situations and high fire seasons.
