Helping My Mother Afford to Get Eye Surgery
Hello, my name is Cody Velarde and I am fundraising in order to get my mothers eye surgery paid for. The reason I'm doing this is to help her get back to her feet before she goes completely blind. In the past year Covid has been hard on many family's just as its has on mine. Before this pandemic kicked off in early 2020 my mom was having heart issues which ended up preventing her from work. This made it incredibly hard for her to not only support herself but my two little sisters and I as well being a single mother. With many different scares of what could be wrong with her and many visits to the hospital she ended up losing her job as a hospice nurse. The only thing keeping her relatively afloat was the unemployment from Covid and me sending money home from boot camp as well as very time I could afford to help her out as well as my brother helping out as much as he could.
Although it had ups and downs throughout this past year, her being in and out of surgery to help get herself better; things are starting to slowly get better. However, already having eye issues for years the added stresses that this past year caused her created more issues on her eyesight. This hindered her even more from being able to get back into the workforce. With her medication for her heart being a big factor in her developing cataracts in both her eyes, its become necessary for her to undergo surgery to prevent her from going completely blind and to regain the majority of her lost sight. Her insurance will be able to cover the removal of the cataracts themselves, but it wont be able to help her have normal vision again. This will prevent total blindness in the future but wont give her good enough sight to reenter the workforce to help get back on her own feet again.
The additional cost to fix her eyes after the cataract surgery is about 1900 dollars. Since the unemployment checks stopped being sent to those who lost jobs due to the pandemic she is unable to afford the surgery to fix her eyes. The doctors told her that they need to do the surgeries together and can't be done separately in order to bring back most of her vision. The first eye surgery takes place in late august but needs a one week final notice on if she can afford it or not for it to be able to happen. This leaves us a deadline of august 15th to raise enough money for the first eye and with enough luck, even enough for both eyes. I would like to thank everyone who is reading this for their time and hope that at the very least you could share this with friends and families in your communities. It would mean the world to me and my family to see my mother be able to get back on her own to feet again.
