Mimis Fresh Tees is a Black woman-owned T-shirt design company based in Portland, Oregon. For two years, owner Mimi Adams has created T-shirts to start tough conversations that society hasn’t yet wrapped its head around.
As people across the country march and fight for equity and justice, Mimi’s Fresh Tees have gained popularity because they let people share their truth without uttering a word. Just as the company found success, someone attempted to tear them down by mailing a letter to the owner filled with hate and threatening her life and the life of her daughter.
In Mimi's own words: “I was living my life and keeping to myself. Living my life in this skin and suddenly my world was violated. My sanctuary, my home, my comfort was violated. I came home to find the attached letter addressed to me. It speaks for itself. Like all of us, I want to be safe physically and emotionally. And that was taken away from me. This is the experience of Black people in Portland in 2020. This is not unique. I am not the first, and unfortunately, I won’t be the last.
This experience has invigorated me and rededicated me to this work and my business. Hate will not win here. Love over hate.”
Mimi's friends, family and community want her to continue to build capital for her business and find safe housing for her and her family.
