To start off, I want to thank you so much for taking the time to read this story and why I am reaching out on behalf of my sister, Melissa Sparks.
My sister has always been the go-getter, always having a desire to help people. As she was working full-time to provide for her family of 5, her heart was wanting more. In 2014, at the age of 35, she accomplished her lifelong dream as she graduated school with her RN degree. Quickly after graduation, she passed her NCLEX and began working in the field her heart was made for.
As the years passed, Melissa realized the demand for more nurses and would end up working four to five 12 hour shifts, sometimes back to back. She knew her patients needed her. Fast forward a few years later, it’s now 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic has struck. Nurses are becoming even more short on demand but Melissa, as well as many other nurses, remained on the frontline as they provided care for COVID positive patients.
Unfortunately, tradegy struck Melissa on 09/10/2020 when she tested positive for COVID-19. She was placed on leave until she received a negative COVID test. Most people think it only takes 14 days, well that’s definitely not this case. Melissa is still fighting a nightmare 9 months later and has been 5 months without ANY income. Not only has this affected her health but has affected her family as well. She reaches out to nurses she’s worked with and has documented her post-COVID symptoms to let people know that if they’re experiencing the same symptoms, they are not alone.
The following is what I would like to share as far as her health:
COVID headaches daily
43+ lbs of weight gain
Difficulty swallowing
Popcorn lung/ scarring in both lungs
4mm nodule in left hip bone
Unstable blood pressure
5mm calcified blood clot in right artery
Multiple kidney stones
5mm nodule on right upper lobe of lung
Enlarged heart
Abdominal and pelvic pain
Difficulty breathing; trouble walking to the mailbox
Continuous Oral thrush
High heart rate
Severe swelling in both feet (see pictures)
Uterine fibroids
Neuropathy in hands and feet
And sadly, there are more symptoms than this.
At the end of this, I want to say that this GoFundMe page wasn’t just my idea but our whole family’s. We are only asking for $2000 but she could use so much more. Any donation, big or small, will help her and her expenses! We have seen many struggles but nothing to this degree. We appreciate wholeheartedly anything that is donated.
