Hi, my name is Christina. My 14 year old daughter has spinal muscular atrophy. She is 100% reliable on her wheelchair for mobility. Last year, we fought many months with our insurance to approve a new wheelchair for Maddie. Unfortunately, on the last appeal they decided to hold up their denial. We were ultimately forced to pay out of pocket $6000 for her wheelchair. However, we were not able to purchase the accessory to make the chair more accessible, which would cost an additional $6000. The device she would absolutely thrive from is called a smart drive. It’s a motor that attaches to the back of her wheelchair and provides additional mobility support. This would be crucial for Maddie to have as her diagnosis causes her to fatigue easily from muscle weakness. It would open her entire world as she would be able to access rough terrain and be included in anything her peers or siblings were doing.
