I am the Social Worker at Lockwood STEAM Academy in East Oakland. Two weeks ago, a father of two young children at my school, one in third grade and one in kindergarten, unexpectedly and suddenly passed away. The family are newcomers who recently arrived from Guatemala in the last two years. The kids are devastated to have lost their loving father, which has also created a permanent income loss from the main financial provider, and has left mom to be the sole provider for the family. This is very tough while also navigating life in a new country and the collective grief they are all enduring. Any financial support to help with the costs of the funeral, help with bills and basic needs during this time of grieving, and to help provide Christmas gifts to help the kids find a semblance of normalcy and joy in the wake of this immense loss would be greatly appreciated. Mom expressed to me that it is very challenging to be going through this far away from family and community and is deeply grateful for any support anyone is able to offer during this time of need.

Hace dos semanas, un padre de dos niños pequeños de mi escuela, uno en tercer grado y otro en kínder, falleció inesperada y repentinamente. La familia está formada por recién llegados de Guatemala hace dos años. Los niños están devastados por la pérdida de su querido padre, quien también les ha provocado una pérdida permanente de ingresos de su principal sostén económico, y ha dejado a su madre como la única proveedora de la familia. Esto es muy difícil, al tiempo que se enfrenta a la vida en un nuevo país y al dolor colectivo que todos están padeciendo. Cualquier apoyo financiero para ayudar con los gastos del funeral, las facturas y las necesidades básicas durante este tiempo de duelo, y para ayudar a proporcionar regalos de Navidad que ayuden a los niños a encontrar un poco de normalidad y alegría tras esta inmensa pérdida, sería muy apreciado. Mi madre me comentó que es muy difícil pasar por esto tan lejos de su familia y comunidad, y está profundamente agradecida por cualquier apoyo que puedan ofrecer en estos momentos de necesidad.
