To know Kaitlyn is to LOVE Kaitlyn. She’s a beautiful 12 year old girl that absolutely loves her little brother and sister, loves playing and going for walks with her huge 5 year old German Shepherd, enjoys playing and competing in archery, has had a black belt in karate since she was 9, loves tap and hip-hop dancing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, and playing video games with her friends.
While the pandemic isn’t the thing that brought us to this moment, it most certainly didn’t help her current situation. On Tuesday April 27th, Kaitlyn tried to end her pain, depression, and her overwhelming feeling of loneliness by attempting to take her life. She has been fighting, ever since that moment, for her life in Pediatric ICU. She gets stronger and stronger everyday but everyday is still a battle. We still don’t know what the long term effects of the gunshot wound to her brain will be but we know that it’s definitely going to be a very long road to recovery for a traumatic brain injury.
The rate of suicide among those aged 10-24 have increased significantly in the last year. And more specifically in the ages of 10-14, suicide by gun increased by over 200%.
She will eventually be moved to an inpatient rehab facility when she leaves the hospital. Unfortunately, the rehab facility she needs will either be located in Atlanta, GA or Charlotte, NC but with that comes added expenses as well. Extensive physical, occupational and neurological rehab will be required. Then after that she will go to an inpatient facility to address her mental health and wellness.
For the time being Kaitlyn needs complete care. She is speaking a bit but it is difficult at times. She can’t quite feed herself and was just moved to a solid food (but cut up very small and bite sized) & thicken liquid diet. We are unsure if she will have to relearn to walk as she is not able to feel the limbs on the right side of her body right now.
The positive news is that Kay IS improving, but still has a very long way to go. Her progress cannot be measured in days or weeks but in months and months.
We are reaching out for help with the mounting medical bills and for what will be a long, arduous road to recovery.
We greatly appreciate anything you can give. No donation is too small. We know a lot of people are struggling right now during this pandemic.
Thank you for your kindness, generosity, love and prayers. None of us can make it alone.
Thank you to the many people who have reached out, sent their love & visited, it’s greatly appreciated & welcomed during this time. Please remember to hug and kiss your loved ones, especially our youth because you just never know. Everything can change in an instant.
