Following the deterioration and collapse of the statute of King Donal Mór O'Brien in the grounds of the Cathedral, we are looking to restore or replace the statue.

The original sculpture was commissioned in 2020 to commemorate Donal Mór O'Brien, King of Munster and founder of Saint Mary's Cathedral, one of Ireland's most significant medieval ecclesiastical landmarks. The statue served as a powerful visual representation of Limerick's rich heritage, connecting visitors, students, and the wider community with the city's origins and cultural identity.

Unfortunately, following years of exposure to the elements, the wooden sculpture suffered irreversible deterioration and ultimately collapsed. Its loss represents not only the disappearance of an important artistic work but also the removal of a valued educational and heritage feature from the cathedral precinct.

We are seeking funding to commission a suitable replacement that will:

Preserve and promote the historical legacy of Donal Mór O'Brien and Saint Mary's Cathedral.

Enhance the visitor experience for local, national, and international tourists.

Support cultural education and interpretation within Limerick's Medieval Quarter.

Showcase the work of skilled artists and craftspeople.
