My name is Laura Bucher. Many of you may not know me but Adrienne Kinder Scott is my cousin and forever BFF. This fall, Adrienne, her husband Hunter, and their two-year-old son Nolan, have been faced with terrifying uncertainty and overnight their lives have been turned upside down.

 

In late October, seemingly out of nowhere, Hunter became unwell. On October 21st, Hunter was admitted to Duke University Hospital. On the 22nd, he was diagnosed with Gillian Barre Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease that attacks the nerve. They do not know what caused it and frankly it does not matter at this moment. This has left Hunter almost completely paralyzed. The doctors have warned the family that this could get worse before it gets better. Last week, Hunter received a treatment (5 days) of IVIG to help. Unfortunately, this treatment did not prove successful, and Hunter has declined. Hunter is now on day 16 in the hospital, day 11 in the ICU and has a very long unknown road ahead. Hunter is starting another treatment, plasma exchange, in hopes it will help his disease. This will take an additional 10 days in the hospital. If this treatment works, Hunter will then spend an unknown amount of time in a rehab facility where he will have to relearn seemingly simple daily functions, things we all take for granted. This is going to be hard work, but Hunter is strong and he's a fighter. Right now, there is just no way to know how long this fight will be. In the meantime, Adrienne, a school teacher, is not able to work as she needs to focus on taking care of Hunter and their young son during this time.

 

This has been a completely devastating and unexpected tragedy for Hunter, Adrienne, Nolan and their loved ones. Please help provide some relief to the Scott family while they deal with their current reality.
