Helping Hugo Beat Aplastic Anemia
Donation protected
This is my sweet nephew, Hugo. For those of you who don't know, Hugo got very sick last year and was in the hospital for weeks before finally getting a diagnosis: Aplastic Anemia. Aplastic anemia is a rare but serious blood condition that happens when your bone marrow stops making new blood cells which are needed for your body to function. He was airlifted to Boston for treatment and stayed there for months. He came home at Thanksgiving with a hopeful prognosis, but ultimately, the treatment he received wasn't enough. Today, May 29, 2024, Hugo is again in Boston and undergoing a bone marrow transplant. They were able to find a donor who was a 100% match. (If you are eligible and are not registered to be a bone marrow donor, you should be.)
If you are a praying person, I ask that you add Hugo to your prayers. If you feel inclined to send him a card during the upcoming months of post-transplant isolation, please let me know and I will provide his address. As you can imagine, he is rather tired of hospitals, so bits of cheer are quite welcome.
Hugo's main goal after recovery is to be able attend school in the fall. He missed the entirety of last year and just wants to be back.
Hugo is fortunate that they have health insurance, but his care, travel, and long-term stays in Boston have prevented his mother from working for the last year and also limited his father's ability to work to an extent. Travel back and forth and other expenses have added up and, of course, insurance doesn't cover everything. If you are a parent, I am sure that you can imagine how difficult this has been on their family. I am hoping that we can ease the burden, just a little bit. They did have a Go Fund me last year, for his first residence in Boston, but they need a little more help to get through this next part.
If everyone out there in FB land gave just $10, it would go a long way and I would be ever so grateful.
So would Hugo!
