Helping Hands for Marla
This page is a fundraiser to support Marla Rinaldi in her battle against Uterine Cancer.
After a routine pap smear and subsequent biopsy, it was a shock to our family when Marla was diagnosed with Grade 3 Uterine Cancer. Her diagnosis came three years to the month, when her twin sister Cara was diagnosed with Renal Pelvic cancer of the kidney, and diagnosed with a cancer syndrome.
"Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer Syndrome (HNPCCS) or Lynch syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic condition that has a high risk of colon cancer as well as other cancers including endometrial cancer (second most common), ovary, stomach, small intestine, hepatobiliary system, upper urinary tract, brain, and skin." This condition is not rare, it's under diagnosed and accounts for 5% of colon type related cancers.

Marla is my fraternal twin sister and best friend.

She was by my side while I battled kidney cancer, came to terms with Lynch Syndrome, and under went a prophylactic radical hysterectomy with bso. Our family has always faced difficult circumstances head on and cancer is no exception.
We lost many family members due to cancer and Lynch Syndrome, including our Father when we were children. We will continue fighting cancer from taking anymore of our family, and through advocacy, help many more people understand their risks. Now we have the knowledge, gained through loss, which is helping us prevent and catch cancer at its earliest stages.

Marla has been running her own business for close to a decade as a licensed massage therapist. Her passion for helping people feel better, in a caring and compassionate way extends as far back as 1998 as a CNA, and a personal assistant. Marla's skill for caring for people is a gift she was born with.
She listens with an open heart and mind, and if you're lucky enough to have received a hug from her, you have felt the love and warmth her embrace carries, and she will most likely let go of you last. In my experience, my sister's hugs can take away, if for only a moment, any pain I've ever felt. Marla carries the gift of knowing how to comfort someone, not only care for them.
Marla's optimism shines bright, as she continues working to make people feel better until her upcoming surgery. We are in the beginning steps of Marla's care.
Marla's surgery for a radical hysterectomy is scheduled in two weeks. We will know what stage cancer she has after surgery and if there will be any additional treatments. We will keep you up to date on Marla's cancer care and journey.
