My name is Hussam Jamal. I’m 18 years old. I graduated from Arlington High School last year and I planned to pursue a career in cooking and baking. I started learning how to make bread in my mom's kitchen. While in high school I took part in a cooking program while working part-time at Stop & Shop.
Last year, I was told I had Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that occurs in the bones or soft tissue. Before my diagnosis, while I was still in school, I was often tired. I lost weight because I wasn't eating, couldn't sleep, and had a hard time breathing. Unable to cook or study, I became confused and depressed. Relief only came when my doctors told me I had cancer because now I knew what was wrong with me.
This past year hasn't been easy. I've had multiple surgeries. My organs, such as my lungs, heart, kidney, and liver, were affected by the tumor. I’m glad to say that I don’t need any more surgeries at this time. However, my current treatments are chemotherapy, dialysis, and prescribed medications, all of which come with debilitating side effects. Chemotherapy is by far the hardest, leaving me tired and sick. My mom stopped working to take care of me. My family is also very supportive. My recovery will take time, but Insha'Allah, I'll be able to bake again, go biking and hiking and hang out with my friends.
Your donations will go towards helping my family pay medical bills, but it will also give us all some breathing room after a very difficult year. Thank you for your kindness.
