LAURA’S CANCER SURVIVOR MEDICAL FINANCIAL NEEDS:

I am starting this GoFundMe to help my daughter Laura Hage. She was diagnosed with uterine cancer several months ago and had surgery at The City of Hope (one of the top cancer centers in the country and a great help to her both financially and medically). She also received treatment and help at Memorial Care. After healing from the operation she was given small doses of radiation with a low percentage of further problems. She is recovering slowly and the pains from the surgery and radiation have continued to bother her, so she has been going to physical therapists in addition to her doctors. Another problem is that these pains are preventing her from lifting or bending over to reach anything and troubles with her legs and other areas of her body makes it difficult for her to do daily activities.

As a result of the cancer and rehabilitation, she has had many doctor, lab, and therapy bills, as well as her normal living obligations, which she is unable to pay at this time. Because she is not able to go back to work yet, these bills have been escalating. In addition, she has been on a special diet which is both costly and time consuming to prepare.

LAURA’S TRANSPORTATION FINANCIAL NEEDS:

In addition to all the medical related bills, she needs a safe, reliable car to get to the doctors, therapists, and daily activities (City of Hope can be a 2 hour drive depending on traffic). For awhile I had driven my car out to California, but I had to take it back there and so now she  needs reliable transportation. During this whole process, her current car failed to meet smog inspection, her air conditioning doesn’t work, and the windows don’t work either, so it is extremely hot since the windows are in the up position. The car is old with many miles on it, the engine is going, and several mechanics have told her it would cost at least $1000 and maybe more with no guarantees it can be fixed.  The car is not worth that much, and probably wouldn’t last very long even if it could be fixed. Because of the failed smog emission, she is unable to drive the car as it could possibly be impounded and she could get a huge fine. As a father, I worry a great deal about her and her safety... and driving is a huge concern for me.

MORE ABOUT LAURA

Laura works for an airline, but is also a talented singer/songwriter who goes by the stage name, “That Girl Laura”. (We are very distant cousins to Danny/Marlo Thomas, hence the “That Girl” reference.)  She has played in various venues in many states. She is very caring and religious and her faith has helped immensely during this troubled time.

LAURA’S PARENTS

Her mother (Sherry Meredith) and I (Dennis Hage) have helped her out as much as we can, but we are retired ex-teachers and have a limited income and have used up all the money we have to help her. To make matters more troubling, we live in Florida and she lives in California. We both have been trying to be caretakers, but my wife had to return to Florida due to some health concerns of her own. So mostly I have been trying to care for her the best I can. However, my wife doesn’t see too well, so driving is an issue for her back there all alone, so I have to go back there soon. Although I am so grateful that she is recovering, I am feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with myself and the situation that I have no control over.
