Critical Care & Recovery For The Short Family

Donation protected
Hey everyone, my name is Jonathan Short, and my brother is James Short.

James is a loving husband, amazing father, United States Army Veteran, and an incredible influencer in the world of wrestling. As an All-American, Gardner Webb University Hall of Fame inductee, and Olympic trials participant, James is known across the country for his long-term ties in the wrestling community.

He recently returned to the Carolinas to be closer to family and to take over the Strong and Courageous Wrestling Club with the mission of putting southern wrestling back on the map. Unfortunately, that mission has been put on pause.

On Sunday, March 20th James was rushed to the ER when he experienced sudden confusion and loss of vision. MRI scans revealed not one but multiple tiny "strokes" scattered throughout his brain. Since that time he has left the hospital twice only to return with more strokes and worsening symptoms.

To date, there are as many as 50 lesions shown on the MRI and the cause is still unknown. The doctors suspect he may be experiencing an autoimmune condition called small vessel vasculitis. This condition is extremely rare (less than 700 cases per year) and very difficult to diagnose.

On May 13th he underwent a brain biopsy to help determine the cause of his symptoms and the results are still pending. In the meantime, he is receiving treatment for vasculitis, and although it can be treated, the effects of the stokes have been quite devastating, with recovery estimated in months or years after the initial symptoms have resolved.

James remains hospitalized at Greenville Memorial Hospital until he is medically ready to be transferred to a long-term care facility.  Whether or not the VA will continue to pay for his care remains to be seen.

I've created this fundraiser to assist his wife Jacqui and his two young daughters, Rachel (3) and Ashley (11 months) with expenses related to medical bills above and beyond what the VA will cover, legal fees, travel expenses should the VA elect to send him out of state for care, and any equipment or modifications that will need to be made once he does return home (ramps, walkers, grab bars, etc)

I am hoping to reach out to the many people who have been touched by his big heart throughout the years to help ease the burden on his family during this difficult time. We are hopeful and pray to God every day for his healing and restoration, and in the same breath, we understand that when God does heal him, the road to recovery will be very long. We want nothing more than for James to return to his family and to serving the community and sport that he loves.

Thank you in advance for your donation and continued prayers.
